Hi all, when you look at my signature you'll notice I like big petrol engines and dont mind bad consumption too much. That is why you can buy them for a good price.
Anyway I bought a Gen 3 last week replacing my old Blister.
Consumption is way diffrent. Dtiving it back from PTA to Underberg I got only 6.9km/l and mixed driving gave me 4.5km/l.
That is way worse than the Blister or my prev V8 Rangie.
Could there be something wrong like a fuel sensor or so. I don't smell overfueling.
I don't want any mods like freeflow and chipping. I just want to make sure it gives the 'normal' expected consumption.
Thanks
Pierre
Freshman,
The first thing to do with a new car's consumption is to check the accuracy of the speedo and odo.
What size tyres are you running?
Was this tested over a few tankfulls?
6.9km/L equates to 14.5L/100km, which is not too bad - depending on conditions, but 4.5 is not cool - that is what big old Cruizers used to give, with those 4.5 motors.

Hi
Normal driving you should see between 6.2 and 6.5 km/l (my Gen 3 experience).Open road 7,5 to 8.2 with the speed control on at 110km/h no hills, no headwind.
My bigest improvement in fuel consumption came after replacing the plugs and fitting a new air filter.
Good luck.

I've got 265 70 16 on at the moment.
I just came back from a 2-day trip with some mixed driving again. This time it worked out at 5.9km/l
Still heavier than by Blister auto.
I'll keep on monitoring.
This Gen3 is a manual with branches and what sounds like a freeflow. So all that should make it lighter than my ex-auto with standard manifold and pipe.
I know with the Blister I once replaced some fuel senor after smelling fuel at start-up which helped with the consumption.
I don't smell any fuel on the Gen3 though.
Thanks for the inputs

I'm taking a very long chance, but maybe it is something to consider. Many years ago I was driving a Datsun bakkie (Not that the Datsun and the Pajero is in the same league). The symptoms was the same: sudden high fuel consumption and the clunk noise.
I replaced the clutch plate, pressure plate and the thrust bearing. The noise was gone and fuel consumption back to normal.

Does it have a roofrack?
In my experience a roofrack is good for between 1l/100km and 2l/100km.

Hi, thanks
It only has the standard rails, no crossbars.
The prev Owner fitted a new clutch but I'll look into that

Hi freshman, check if the air filter is blocked? Also take out the mass airflow meter and it spray clean with elctrokleen by Spanjaard, it the the body just after the air filter that has a honey comb mesh in it. It tells the engine how much air is being consumed, if it is dirty it gives the wrong readings. Also remove its electrical connector and give a clean with elektrokleen too.
How are the sparkplugs, when last were they changed? Start with the basics. Also does it have a chip in, it might be poorly tuned?

Hi Nick,
Thanks - I fitted a new air filter. Don't think it is chipped but going to try and contact the prev Owner to find out.
I'll do the cleaning of the sensors (I just remembered that I did it on the Blister as well).
Thanks again
