Pajero Gen2 Coolant Loss
Hi everyone

I'm looking for some advice on what the cause of the following problem might be.

The Paj decided to dump the entire contents of the cooling system on the way home from work yesterday. I noticed a puff of steam from under the bonnet, checked the temp gauge but was running normal. Nursed it home for the last km to find no coolant in the expansion tank and radiator.

I left everything to cool down, removed the bash plates, got the torch and guess what no obvious leak or cracked pipe. So today I refill the system (6 litres) with coolant and water, start the Pajero and at first no issues.

I didn't have to look far once the engine warmed up. A river of coolant is pouring from on top of the gearbox. My guess is heater pipe. I can't feel any moisture on the carpets in the foot wells.

Anyone experienced this before or able to advise how to approach the repair (from inside the vehicle or from underneath)?

Thanks

Re: Pajero Gen2 Coolant Loss
I had a similar case, check the internal heat radiator
Look for moisture under the carpet front seats.
If there is moisture the the problem is in the internal radiator (is easy to bypass the system)
in general you have the pipes from the radiator to the engine, there another 2 pipes to the fuel pump (shoke) and 2 pipes to the internal radiator

Re: Pajero Gen2 Coolant Loss
I doubt it is the heater as you would see the steam coming the the dashboard vents..most likely one of the coolant crossover pipes at the back of the motor

Re: Pajero Gen2 Coolant Loss
Thanks for the advice chechole. I've checked the carpets around the front seats and foot wells and no moisture. I think it's the pipes on top of the gearbox that are leaking.

Diagnosis: Water pump

Crack/hole pushing coolant backwards in between the V over the back of the engine, down on to the gearbox and then the floor.

Going to change the cam belt at the same time :-(

b_killer,

How many kms on that water pump - do you know?
What is the price of the water pump and is there one available?

I hope your motor came through the coolant loss episode without any damage - luckily, those V6 motors are extremely tuff!

Good luck,

Re: Pajero Gen2 Coolant Loss
Roelf, the water pump made it to just short of 160,000km and +-18 years. I was planning to replace at 180, 000km but it beat me to it.

The replacement genuine part was R1,148 from the PE dealer.

The motor seems to be fine. I was close to home when it happened and still had 4litres of coolant in the system when it cooled down.

Had the cambelt replaced at the same time and the motor now feels more responsive or free to rev which might just be in my mind or might have something to do with the new belt and pump. The belt hadn't done 90, 000km but was last done in 2007 so rather old.

Re: Pajero Gen2 Coolant Loss
Thanks for the feedback.

Yip, a new pump to go with the second belt change is definitely the way to go. I think your progress was just a touch slow :D.

My 2008 should get to 180k km in about four years time, when it will be just under 10 years old. Hope it will last until then :o .

I have a bottle of genuine Mitsu coolant in my garage, so any small top-ups happen with the real thing - hopefully this will also take better care of the old pump.

Re: Pajero Gen2 Coolant Loss
I had the similar problem with my 96 Pajero. On my way back from Lesoto I noted the heat gauge are higher than normal. When I came at home I filled the radiator with +- 4 lt. of coolant. I left for Northern Cape for the December holiday. I have done the ten passes between Springbok and Garries. I have noted that when the engine works hard there was a temperature increase up to three quarters of the gauge. On my way back home between Ceres and Sutherland the car overheated. The temperature was 43 deg . It looked like there was air bubbles in the radiator after I filled it with coolant. Every 100 km it needs a water top up and I slept over at Beauford West . The next morning the radiator was full and I could not see any bubbles. I toped up the water reserve tank and drove to Pretoria (not exceeding 100 km/h) without any problems. I tested the car by driving at higher speed without any trouble. To date it is still ok. Have anybody else have the same experience and what could be the problem. Someone told me that the Pajero have a design fault at high temperature causing the thermostat to close .
