Steering issue
Hi guys

My 2000 3.5v6 has been such a pleasure over the last 7000kms that I've owned her for. Really enjoy driving that gurgling V6!

I have only one problem and that is that the steering wheel more often than not needs to be at 10.or 11 o'clock to go in a straight line. I thought this was wheel alignment but have had it checked by 4 different places and they all tell me the alignment is fine.

I've also had suspension checked, no problems there. The problem is worse on a Road with a camber and markedly worse at speed. It also sometimes feel like steering is response is very loose as well. I've been told the issue is likely a "high spot" in the steering box. It really is just a minor nuisance to always have to concentrate on holding the wheel off center when driving, so I'm not willing to spend thousands. But I would like to know if anybody has any suggestions for me to look at?

Re: Steering issue
If the car does not change direction when you let go your hands from the steering wheel then I would suggest you get someone like an alignment specialist to simply compensate on the toe-in to centralise the steering. It will require one wheel to be pulled in an the other pushed out an equal amount on the toe-in adjustment.
If the car does change direction and you are sure about the alignment look at your tyres. Tyres worn more towards one side can cause this. Even the back tyres will. Tyres worn like this will always tend to push the car in the direction where the tyre's circumference is the smallest. So if the tyres on the same axle is not worn to the same pattern you will find the car drifts slowly to one side and the driver then has to steer to the opposite direction. It often starts after a tyre rotation.

A couple of pointers:
1. Just because the WHEELS are perfectly aligned, that does not mean that the steering wheel is pointing 12o'clock.

Is your vehicle lifted? If so the tyre places should actually compensate camber for that - not just set to what the alignment computer says that Mitsubishi recommends.

But I don't think that is your problem.

If the car is wandering look at:
1. Suspension bushes.
2. Wheel bearings.
4. Tie rod ends.
5. Steering rack.
6. Check the tyres / tyre wear. I know that on my 2002 LWB the steering can be negatively influenced by tyre wear. I fact if I have to replace a pair of tyre I generally put the new ones on the front because then the vehicle tracks better..
7. Tyre pressure can also affect steering.
Re: Steering issue
Hi Andrew. The vehicle is not lifted. I have had everything you mentioned looked at apart from steering rack.

I understand what you say about the wheel not necessarily being at 12 o'clock but the vehicle pulls when the wheel is let go (the wheel wants to be at 12 oclock), which tells me something is out of line.

I'll have the steering rack looked at. Thanks.

Another thought. Have you thought about taking it to a specialised chassis alignment place to check that the chassis itself is straight?
Re: Steering issue
Well what is the condition of your tyres and are all four the same?

Re: Steering issue
Interesting thought Andrew. I hadn't thought of that.

Big will all 4 tyres are good and the same.

Re: Steering issue
I have this clicking sound on my steering on a 2015 DiD LWB and slight shake on the steering when I am at 120 or 130, they say my wheel alignment is also correct.

Any tips
