I know there were previous threads regarding a cure for the Pajero V6 lifter noise. I recently purchased a 2005 Pajero 3.5 V6 LWB, with only 146 000km on the clock. Only problem was that the lifters made a BIG noise!
I searched the forums for a cure, and in the end took it to Tom van Wyk (Car Doctor, Brackenfell) as he is a specialist on Mitsubishi down here.
I fetched my Pajero from him last night, and it is a complete different vehicle - she now purrs like a V6 SHOULD!!
I phoned Tom this morning to find out what he did, and he has no problem to share the recipe. This is what he did:
First, drain 500ml of the old oil.
Then add Wynns Engine Flush (I will get the exact name later if anybody is interested). Let the vehicle idle at 1 800rpm for 20 minutes.
Then drain all the oil, replace filter, and put in Fuchs Titan GT1 (5W-40) oil.
This oil is expensive, but full synthetic, and if I listen to my Pajero, it WORKS!

I am sure many guys are thinking the same thing and do not want to burst your bubble. Don't declare early victory I say. I have had those pesky lifters quiet for 5000-6000 km after a service, then one morning they are back.
The Delo400 oil and the slight the overfill worked best of the non-intrusive solutions. Engine flush certainly will make a good difference.
The Titan and other expensive Mitsubishi gearbox oil is available from SOS oils at a slightly better price than the parts outlets.

During the last service the Mitsubishi agent put in Helix HX7 (Full synthetic)into my motor, and they ticked the very next morning. So don't use HX7 if you can help it.

The problem is they get stuck due to small amounts of dirt (oil shelac) build up, which prevents the smooth working. This can be cleaned.

The other problem is related to the type of oil as it make air-bubbles inside the lifter. That is why the start-wait-restart trick sometimes works. You are giving the air a chance to escape again.
