Odd engine noise Pajero Gen 4
Any insight would be appreciated. My 2008 Gen 4 3,2DID has 115K km 3 months ago it developed an engine noise. Here goes as best I can explain it, slightly worse when cold, around 2000rpm there is among the usual cricket noise a sharp extra click like a stone hitting the body of the car, it is intermittent but can be induced occasionally by dropping rpm to 1000 and then accelerating back to 2000 rpm.
Fuel consumption is a little high imo but always has been 12l/100km on open road at 110kmh. EGR valve replaced a few weeks ago due to engine management light. I have had car at agents and another reputable service agent both have done the electronic diagnostics and say all is 100%. Sadly all ok doesn't explain an unusual noise. Any advice about an approach to this problem would be appreciated.

Maybe record the sound with video and post on youtube with link here. Then we can try some guesses. First guess - maybe check top timing chain guide through the oil cap with a dentist mirror. On older models this was an item that sometimes wore through and could lead to some funny noises but this is a very long shot.

I think what you are experiencing is diesel Clatter. This becomes very prevelant when injectors are faulty.I would take it to a decent diesel autoshop that can test your injectors and maybe even pump for you.It is possible to be reset again and if needed the injectors could be serviced.

Re: Odd engine noise Pajero Gen 4
perhaps some carbon buildup is causing funny ignition properties.

Dump 1 liter JASO FC 2 stroke oil in the fuel tank with your next fill up (full tank) and drive it aggressively that tank.

Remember

1. to wait for engine to get up to temp before driving hard
2. to idle down after driving hard before shutting down
3. it may be slightly smoky that tank.

Some feedback should any one have similar issues. I have used 1l 2SO in a tank of diesel, so far used half of a tank of fuel. The noise much less frequent but still present, engine seems to run better however this is a subjective thing I don't really have a measure of it. If this doesn't work next plan will be to remove intake manifold and have it cleaned, remove injectors have them serviced and replace injector seals, if the noise persists after that then ill drive the car till something breaks

Oil level checked?

Mine tends make a loud ticking sound every now and then when oil gets a bit low
