Hi Guys
i have an issue with a car we just brought my son
it is a 2002 NM DID 5 sp
when we got it had an idle issue, it would idle at 1400rpm
long story short, someone had fitted the throttle body upside down & put the vac hoses on the wrong way and did an idle learn procedure
if i disconnected the battery it would idle at 800rpm but if you touched the throttle it jumped to 1400rpm and when you drove it if it reved over 2000rpm it would then start climbing in rpm
we rectified that side after we connected it to a scan tool (and matched everything that was on the other car)
did a propper idle relearn and it all seamed fine
however give it a rev upto 1950rpm and let it go, it is slow to return to idle
rev it to 2000rpm and it holds there or slowly climbs up in rpm
i took it to a stealer with it idling high ( before we sorted that)
and they just flat out said injection pump and quoted some ridiculous price
has anyone seen anything like this?
it has 273,000km
it drives like there is nothing wrong, except if you push the clutch in over 2000rpm it then want to rev up, let the clutch out and it comes down when decelerating
any thought would be greatly appreciated
thanks James
Any fault codes left?
Have you checked the speed control solenoids for correctness of operation? Also check butterfly valve closure as posted by 4EPikanini a while back? - not sure what the correct name is of that though?

we did a check when it was on the diagnostic machine
is there any other way to check them ?
by any chance do you have a link to that thread on the butterfly you referred to ?
when we brought this car i was hoping it was going to be these sensors
do you or anyone have the part numbers for them ?
thanks guys

well i was going to look at it again this morning
but my son thought it would be go to have another drive last night
and it stopped ( he had to push it home )
i am hoping it has just run out of fuel
it was low on the gauge, but no light came on ( haven't checked to see if that worked)
firstly i will add 10L diesel and see if i can start it
then hopefully have a play with the butterfly unit & re-adjust it

I think it is stuffed pump but might be TPS Throttle Position Sensor as well.

Here is a video to the close off butterfly that I was talking off previously.
Pajero 3.2 idle butterfly mechanism: http://youtu.be/fR4NC2vVH8U
And here is the actual butterfly.
Pajero 3.2 Throttle Body Cold Start: http://youtu.be/EEvaIomD4Ow
But I dont think this will lead to complete engine stall, only incorrect idling and shutdown?

OK
it did just run out of fuel ( gauge was low but no light came on )
added fuel & bleed the system all good again
i have now noticed when you turn it off it gives a little rev on its own
CATS, i will check those video's later tonight
if the tps is on the pedal it has had a new one fitted recently and we did set it up the same as another car while we had the scan tool hooked up

Just on the running out of fuel, the Gen 3 pajeros are prone to having the fuel tank dented in whilst off-roading -it is quite exposed and unprotected. This gives rise false fuel levels on the dash gauge due to the float being held up by by the dented in section of the tank - I know as it happened to me on the N2 next to a squatter camp outside somerset west - not fun at all.razorback481 wrote:OK

The dented in tank can also give running issues due to the pickup being partially obstructed/covered by the dented bottom of the tank.
Have the tank removed and panel beaten if possible by silvertons and re-lined & pressure tested. The lining flakes off once dented and can cause MAJOR issues with the injector pump - it happened to the previous owner of my Pajero - cost him well over R40k in the end to rebuild the pump & injectors and fix all the associated issues.

Something similar happened to me once, check the wires of both speed sensors that come from the injection pump, I replaced them and it went fine.
OK guys
we had a drive this afternoon
it did all it should while the engine was cold
it idle's really nice at aprox 800rpm
it rev's up & down nicely even upto 2800rpm and it comes back down no worries
drives great,
once it starts to show any temp on the gauge it changes
it still idle's nice still aprox 800rpm
it rev's up but is slower to return to idle upto 1950rpm
over 2000rpm it wants to either stay there or slowly climb up in revs till we either let out the clutch to slow it down to 1950rpm then it will return to idle slowly
i have found in one of the vacuum lines there is a small restrictor
is this supposed to be there?
it is very hard to detect if there is much vacuum coming from the 2 lines on the top of the pump
are there any diagrams of the vacuum line so i can see if someone has changed something
having a lot more confidence in the car now
i do believe the injector pump is fine
i am curious if the 2 sensors up the front of the pump could be causing this issue???
do the vacuum solenoids play up much?
are they straight 12v ?? can i just activate them out of the car to make sure they are clear and working ??
thanks guys
