Lamda Sensor on exhaust - 1999 Pajero

I noticed a hole in my exhaust that was welded shut. Someone pointed out to me that this is where the lamda sensor should be. I looked underneath another Pajero and there it was. Mine was removed by the previous owner for some reason and never replaced. What does this sensor do and is it really that important?

I have since established that the lamda sensor measures the amount of oxygen in your exhaust gases and then adjusts the fuel/air mixture accordingly.
The dealers quoted me R2342-55 VAT Excl for the lamda sensor. I gave Schalk at Dyno Logic in Pretoria a call to discuss the sensor issue - it turns out he can supply a 4 wire sensor at +/-R700 and a 5 wire sensor at +/-R1600.

Lambda sensor will improve your fuel consumption as the ecu will have more variables to adjust the injection.
When there is no input from the lambda the ecu uses default values based on the other variables it receives. These default values are on the safe side and is mostly a rich setting ( less damaging than a lean setting )
See if you can find the wires that must have been cut. If you can lengthen the wires and find the oem part number for the sensor, I'm sure you can find it cheaper elsewhere and have a good exhaust shop drill, and tap, the hole at a fraction of that cost mentioned.

It pretty much comes down to what Marius said. The prices your were quoted are not bad at all. I have to pay R6k for a wide band sensor for my Porsche project so R700.00 isn't bad at all. You might also want to try scrapyards for sensors.
