Cracks in Radiaitor - 2000 Blister 3500 V6 178k done

Hello,
I noticed some white residue behind the radiator. I took it to the Silverton Radiator agent in Standerton. They quote me
R 1 250,00 to take my steel radiator out, weld the two cracks, new antifreeze and put it back. All will be well for many km's.
The agent say a new radiator will be over R 3 000,00 not installed.
My question is : Is it worth it to patch an already thin radiator, and can this be done with good results, or should I bite the bullet and install a new one? (The agent say the new radiators are crap)
I am too scared to drive the vehicle on a trip to the city to get it fixed there.
Thanks.
