DIY - Gen2 Anti Roll bar bushes

Postby 4ePikanini Tue Feb 09, 2010 9:59 am

Steps
- loosen and remove first top nut on anti-roll bar ( arb )
- loosen and remove second nut on arb
- remove the washers and top rubber noting the order
- loosen bottom nut that bolts to the lower a-arm
- jack up arb with a bottle jack until the arb clears the shaft
- swivel the shaft out and replace the bottom rubber - I actually removed the whole thing
- swivel back the shaft and slowly release the arb back onto the threaded area
- put other stuff back in order - noting to compress the rubbers for about 5 turns only ( if you keep turning the first nut you will over compress the rubbers and make them fail early ) and then doing the up the second nut tightly.
- clean up

Tools required

14mm spanner
14mm socket and ratchet
4 poly replacements

Time

My first time took 25 minutes in total for both sides including packing tools away

Were they noisy? Hence the replacement or was it just an itch?

I had a knock on the suspension when going through a hole or bump.

I asked SWAMBO to jump on the bullbar while I checked for play.

The bushes had some play - I could have just tightened the nuts but was afraid they break in the middle of nowhere and then I will have a real bad clunking and wobbly steering.

So, I replaced the bushes and tightened the shock bolts ( looked like they had play as well ) and now my suspension feels solid again.

The Gen 3 looks a little different: it uses a little link with spherical joints at each end to connect the lower suspension arms to the anti-roll bar, so the noise would be more likely to emanate from the saddles that hold the anti-roll bar in position against the chassis. These saddles have a rubber bush as well.

Hi Marius

This "anti roll bar bushes" seems like teflon bushes. Did you replace the rubber with teflon and where did you buy it ?
I quickly tested mine and cannot find that it is freely movable, but for sure looks old and wear and teared. What do you suggest ?

I bought mine from Milner offroad in the UK but due to them valueing the package at £55 I paid more tax than what they would cost at midas.

These bushings gets really brittle when soak in mud, water and of course heat. Of course you badly need to replace the whole things because the suspension will be a bit squeaky without it.

So I have this terrible squeek and it's off with the wheels last week just to find the two top balljoints have the rubbers damaged and I cannot get to the bottom ones nipples.

This is a question for another thread, back to the topic. I print this thread and take it with to Goede Hoop Spares. They showed me that my Pajeros suspension shares the same parts as that from the older square Colts. Buy 4 in PU rubber for R60 in blue nogal to match the car!!!

Now my problem, my suspension completely different to this thread :!:

What is this part called? I need to get them replaced. The one on the right is fine but the one on the left is bent and the top nut is loose so it will be a grinder job to remove.

Thanx for the info. Only one left in the country, will try and source the right hand one from Japan. "Your car is old and spares is a problem" :(
