REPLACING SPARKPLUGS ON THE 6G75 (3.8) ENGINE

Hi guys,

I want to replace the sparkplugs on my 3.8 V6 before going on a round the country trip.

The info in the Haynes manual is not very good. If anybody can assist with accurate info on the procedure, please assist.

I would also like more info on the actual sparkplugs. In the service booklet they say that the plugs should be replaced every 30 000km. True or false? If false, what is the recommended distance interval between replacements.

A new set costs ±R600,00 per set and if the job is done by the agents, they also charge 1 hour labour at ±R600,00/hr.

Cloyd, the plugs on both my 3.8 cars (Gen3 SWB and now on my Gen4) were never changed by the agents under the maint plan. So they lasted at least 100k. I add 2SO on long overland trips and when those extremely hard-worked plugs came out, they still looked pretty damn good and usefull. The answer to your first question is: yes, the book says 30k, but practice is far from it.

I have no doubt that between Haynes and your own considerable skill, that you will manage just fine to replace them. Me, I happily pay somebody else to remove knuckle skin in my stead.

Roelf,

I prefer to do it the "armgat" way. It gives me something to do! Plus: at least if I do it myself, I know that they are/will be new. I also prefer to do some "homework" before taking on a new job.

My Paj has 140 000km on the clock. Maybe the stealers did replace them under the Maintenance plan but I can not find any reference to that effect in the vouchers. So I shall do it and have some peace of mind.

I knew what your answer was going to be

My only advice would be to make sure you get the long life jobbies... at R600 it most probably is. I think my Irridium tipped plugs came at about R800.

This is my worry. The stealers have to order them and it will take a few days. The salesman assured me that the price he gave me was for the long life jobbies - according to the VIN number.
So to make it easy, I went to Action Spares and then to MIDAS. No stock - in fact they said they have never sold them but the price guideline is about R150,00 each.

From the big price difference between the stealers and normal spares outlet, I have doubts. How can I identify the iridium tips?

Let me see if I can get something from the workshop that did mine.

I still can not believe that I didn't take a snap of my plugs coming out or of the ones (including the box) going in...... water under the bridge.

PS: if it was me, I would take the ones from the dealer, mine came from the dealer....... Mitsu branding and Japanese writing and all.
