Hello's!
Ok, I got gifted a roofrack from a family friend - she was cleaning out the garage after her husband passed away.
best photo I now have attached.
this roofrack fits in perfectly between the two rails fitted by Pajero.
Advise - If I put this down directly onto the roof and secure it to the rails - will this damage my vehicle?
the roof itself will carry most of the load and not the rails.

The first problem I spot is that it will scratch the vehicle. I'm thinking of putting padding etc underneath but sill worried about dust.
Mostly I'm worried about if the roof can take the load.

You MUST let the roofrack load rest on the rails, NOT on the roof directly! Even if you put sponges between the rack and roof it will still scratch. You would need rails or some type of clamp to mount the rack onto the rails.

And even then the OEM rails will not take much load. Generally, when a 3rd party roofrack is fitted, 3rd party rails and mounting brackets are fitted in place of the OEM rails, which are mounted on plastic blocks.CATS wrote:You MUST let the roofrack load rest on the rails, NOT on the roof directly! You're not going to like this but, consistent with the advice already given, you mount the rack on two cross bars. That of course places rack right up in the wind.
It looks like a pretty sturdy rack and there are no short cuts without it not ending well.
You clamp the rack to those two or three rails. Go to the Thule website and you will see what I mean. I am not selling Thule, but you can buy U Bolts from them, or any other supplier.
I wanted to do the same thing on my SWB, with a much lighter rack and was persuaded not to.
Frankly, if you really want to max the utility of that rack, get a professional to remove the roof rails and mount the rack (semi permanently) as suggested.
Keep all the parts, as you are going to want them, sooner or later.
