6G74, import engine or rebuild

My 3.5 24 valve twin cam is sitting on 265 000. I am considering either getting a rebuild or putting in an import engine. My mechanical knowledge or skills are not sufficient to do this myself so i will be relying on third party's.

If I go rebuild, what are we looking at here

Crank, bearings and seals
pistons and bearings
Block honed
Oil pump ?
Water pump
cam belt
Air con pump?
Alternator
Hoses
Skim flywheel
Clutch plate
Pressure plate

Potential problems with engineering ?

Head ?
Rebuild?
Valves
stem seals
Cam shafts?

or import engine?
change cam belt
Clutch plate
pressure plate
Plugs?
Oil and filter
Belts

your opinion please

thanks in advance

I just went though a rebuild on a diesel engine which left me a bit disappointed, but I have had a rebuild done on a petrol engine in the past with excellent results.

The 6g74 engine is pretty straight forward and a good rebuilder should be able to do a good rebuild at reasonable cost. I am always wary of other import engines so my vote, on the petrol at least, would be to rather rebuild.

Thanks Cats,

just debating who what and where. I can get an import from Malaysia for 21k, this comes with a 3 month or 5 000 km warranty. The few guys I can find to do a rebuild are reluctant to give any kind of warranty.

There is a little clatter on start up. Could be a number of things but I suspect a bit of piston slap. Goes away after seconds but I need to do the research now. i will know soon if it gets worse as winter comes on and the weather gets colder.

Hi Stranger
Could just be worn valve guides, causing the clatter. Almost sounds like a diesel! :) If I remember correctly replacing the guides was not that expensive. Had a similar thing on my Blister fender and just over oiling it slightly reduced the noise until I sprung for the new guides.

Stranger,
Are you running the motor on Caltex Delo 400 15W40 Multigrade? Is the dipstick oil level at least 5mm above "full"?

Yeah all of that. You guys know how I have looked after this motor. This was running strong. I think that when the water pump went, it caused some damage. Does not need to be much, collapsed ring, small end maybe. Not lifters. Mine have never been noisy but in general, Delo and the overfill made them really quiet.

Thanks

import is looking strong at this stage, lot of people I have contacted are very shy to quote on the rebuild.
