Pajero 3.2 D Smoking & Losing Power

Hi Folks,
I have a situation here. My 3.2 diesel has of late started to smoke and loose power when i want to maintain a constant speed.
Here is what is happening:
>she starts fine.
>Revs fine
>Accelerates fine although there appears to be a bit of a flat spot during acceleration from 0. I depress the pedal a fraction and there seems to be no reaction and then jerks into sudden acceleration. This is more evident when the Engine is still cold although it also happens when the engine is reasonably warm.

PROBLEM
When i want to maintain a constant speed of about 80KMh she begins to smoke and the revs slowly begin to drop and there is a loss of power.I have to push the pedal down a bit like to accelerate again for me to maintain my speed.
However during acceleration like from 0 to a 100, all seems OK! No excessive smoke and has power. shortly after settling at a constant speed. The smoking starts :? The smoke starts lightly and rapidly increases. OH the smoke is Black.

I don't know where to look. Any ideas??

Hello Limuman.

I have had several black smoke episodes recently as described in several posts on the Forum. The problem turned out to be that the fuel tank had been dented upward right underneath the fuel pick-up pipe in the fuel tank. This resulted in the bottom of plastic seive on the pipe (used to prevent loose dirt in the tank getting in) being pushed up against the open end of the pipe so almost completely blocking it. Test for this by blowing and sucking on the pipe feeding fuel to the filter on the bulkhead in the engine bay. One should be able to blow and suck freely. See my Posts which include several photos of the problem and its fix.

Best of luck, Entabeni.

look at fuel tank pickup
look at boost pipes
look at boost sensor (located next to diesel filter with tube to intake manifold)
look at EGR valve
look at frayed or damaged wires at the diesel pump electrical connectors

Hi 4ePikanini
Please excuse my ignorance, what do you mean by " FUEL TANK PICKUP" ? :?:

I have already gone through the wires at the diesel pump connectors. All looks good. Boost pipes look good.

Take the fuel tank protector off underneath and see if the tank is dented.

Hi Guys,
I had a bit of a sweaty weekend. I removed the fuel tank protector and checked the tank; all looks good. no dent. Checked the boost pipes and still all looks good. I went through the wires at the injector pump again and there did not seem anything wrong.
The one thing that I noticed this morning is the problem seems to disappear when i drive with the Aircon on :? . Not sure it could just be my imagination.
Does any one know which of those harnesses to the injector pump is associated with the aircon? The on which makes the revs go up slightly when the Aircon is turned on. I am just guesing but probably that could be where my problem is coming from.
