Hi all...

Whould love to hear from those in the know what you think of a 1995 model Pajero 3.5V6 5spd manual with 198000km on the clock.

Are these motors any good amd are there any know problems with them?

I'd definitely go for it. I bought my 3.0L V6 mk2 with 296,000 km's on it, albeit a newer year, for R52k. Now it's got 304,000 km and super reliable as always.

If its clean and cared for - buy it. Still my favourite Paj (in manual g/box form) for offroading.
IMHO the 3.5 DOHC motor is one of the best Mitsu ever made. Was years ahead of its time. DOHC / 24 valve / seperate coils for each cyl / variable length intakes, great torque but also revs well when needed. In the manual gear ratios are perfect for towing (we had horses)- far better than our later 3.8 Auto in this respect. And as long as it was serviced regularly is super reliable. Can be a thirsty - but this depends a lot on driver.
Minor issues with "clicking" valve lash adjusters (usually linked to infrequent oil changes) about the only thing. 200,000km nothing for these motors - still have hone marks in the bores. Check out the drivetrain (4Wd selection) properly though. Turning circle is terrible - but you soon get used to it!
4 of my "7 Pajero's" have been these (Gen 2 3.5 Manual). I still have one (alongside a 3.2 DiD, a 3.8 petrol and a Disco 4). When we go to the bush we prefer the 1998 3.5 with 300,000km on the clock over the others. I think that says it all. The only one I recommend staying away from (based on my experience is the 2.8 Diesel. It was under-powered and problematic compared to the 3.5 petrol models. But it was the only one I bought new - maybe that was the problem!
