Fuel flow incidents

From Entabeni: 2006 3.2 DiD LWB GLS Auto 213,000 km.
Fuel Flow Incidents:
On a recent trip from Robertson to the Transvaal, Lowveld, Natal and back via the N-E Cape the car occasionally would not start immediately even though the engine was cranked vigorously (as described in previous Posts).
The worst case was in the small Nature Reserve above Matatiele where we stopped for a picnic lunch, after which the car would not start. Five times I bled the filter with the bleed screw removed completely and a Coke bottle catching the fuel (for pouring back into the tank!) all to no avail. Interestingly, there seemed to be no air in the fuel as it squirted into the bottle.
When I started to remove the screw for the sixth time, and before it was fully out, suddenly there was air and fuel squirting out of the slot in the screw! So I left the screw in place and pumped till there was no more air, then tightened the screw and pumped till there was pressure. The engine started immediately and we had no further problem on the return trip. Perhaps there is an intermittent connection to some item, like the fuel pump? Suggestions welcome.
