PAJERO 97 GLS 3500 Aircon Noise

My Pajero recently has an aircon regas. It never had a problem in the past and even when out of gas made no funny noises.When I got it back, the aircon is now producing cold air, but is making a growling noise whenever the compressor clutch engages. The mechanic then replaced the external compressor bearing but this made no difference and I got a bill for R2100. A new compressor is about R7000. Is this perhaps an internal bearing in the compressor, and why would it only show up after a regas? Any suggestions? Is there anywhere in the Durban area that offers reconditioned units?
