What engine conversion for a Gen2 3.5 V6?

Hey guys,

So I sold my Gen2 a few months ago, and since then I've been looking for a project. Looked at Defenders, actually I'm busy with a Jeep right now, but the Gen2 Pajero tends to come back to me because it's good offroad and it's quite cheap to buy.
My experience with the 6G74 hasn't been really good, especially when it comes to power to fuel consumption ratio. I know it's a big 4x4 so it will chow juice, but I can't really have 2 vehicles, so it has to be my everyday runner.

So here I am, it's only food for thought at the moment, but what engine would you recommend to transplant?
- Lexus V8? (even though the fuel consumption will not be any better, at least it'd have more punch)
- Audi 2.7 bi-turbo? (I'd really fancy this as this engine pulls like a train, but can be reasonable on the fuel bill if driven like a granny. Fitment and adaptation would have to be made from scratch though, which could pose more issues.)
- What about diesel? I've got nothing against diesel, I actually prefer it, but I thought that it would be slightly easier to convert the original 3.5 petrol to a petrol engine instead of to a diesel. If I found a 2.8 TDi then I'd rather consider a diesel conversion for the same reason.

Anyways, you guys tell me what you think. If you've done a Lexus conversion, I'd be glad to hear your pros and cons.

Thanks!
Fab.
