Greetings all - new to forum. Had 3 x Pajeros (all SWB) - a Blister fender, a Gen 3 and now I have just found a very nice Gen 4 with low km. Man we pay dearly for good ones but they are worth it. As a family we are big Mitsibushi owners / fans (my son, son in law etc.)

Welcome Peter. Let me sort that dash of yours out if you find it rattles/shakes/moves too much

Thanks guys and Howzit Kurt. Yes I am aware of your and John's fine work. It is on the cards. I must say I was expecting a lot worse from the vehicle. We got it two weeks before and spent a lot of time on Transkei roads over Christmas and it was not too bad. Maybe you have done it already !!!!! Either way I want you to have a look. I tried to have a look using a spatular but I chickened out. I am too fussy to try that myself for the first time !
There are a few things I need to do - The dash mods, EGT (I tow), done EGR and upped the turbo boost to spec, transmission guard (missing). I find the torque / performance great at pull away / low speed but terribly slack cruising. Towing the caravan I need a downhill to overtake! You can feel the torque just is not there - its flat.
What do you think Cats? I read up that the suction control valve can be a problem. Anything else come to mind?

I unfortunately agree. To me my gen4 feel terribly gutless when towing in comparison to my old gen3. I am investigating the SCV to see what that does and then would probably, dare I say it out loud seeing my absolute loathing of it from previous experience on a petrol Colt, look at a computer enhancing of the ECU system(ie
chip)

. I assume your gen 4 is also pre 2010, ie pre the 140kw uprated engine?

PS - what is your consumption towing? You can see my Fuelly stats in my footer on the webview and it ain't great, but then again I take two kitchen sink's along

Cats mine is a 2009 so unfortunately not the 140kw job. 110 000 km on the clock and so very well looked after. Now mine had a chip installed and I asked them to take it out. The engine management light came on during my test drive! The fault code was a fuel pressure that was too high. SAC said they could put a better model chip in that did not have this problem on DID's. I said no thank you. Like you I do not like them.
I notice my Gen4 as with my sons Triton (same onboard computor) that one must take the on board computor stats with a pinch of salt / and / or realize a factor with which to correct it by. When on holiday it indicated 7 to 8 km/L which horrified me. I really nursed it and got an indicated 10km/ L but by the next reading was back to about 9.5 km/L still nursing it. Actual worked out to about 9 (on average while refuelling) which I was still not happy with.
So when I got back I started investigating. As with my previous Pajero's the valves were way out. (I think the mechanics bluff that one). Ran quieter but not the big improvement I was looking for. Next checked turbo boost - it was down - got it up to just below spec. Better but still not what I would have expected. Did the EGR & decat while I was busy in the engine bay. Again no serious improvement. I priced the SCV and was given a price of about R790.00. At that price I think it is worth trying. Also they seem to be a general problem. I also see a higher pressure SCV is available. I am dubious about such.
I would appreciate working with you in resolving this - you are in Centurion aren't you ?
What I did notice was that the turbo on the gen4 is a lot smaller than the Gen3's. The boost spec is the same though. My thinking is smaller turbo less lag but less top end. Not that the Gen3 had lag - it was brilliant. Are we not maybe trying to squeeze blood from a stone ? My son disagrees about turbo size. He says it works the other way round. What says you ?
