2002 3.2 DID SWB GLS Cost of replacement of cylinder head

3 and a half years ago I purchased a 2002 Pajero 3.2 DID SWB GLS, rooftop tent and all, with 253,000 kms on the clock. Today it is on 297,000 kms and we have had great times with it in Kgalagadi.

Over the last few months I have been experiencing radiator water loss. No leaks though. I had the radiator and a pipe replaced, and still water loss. And no obvious water drips. The engine did seem to get hot when the water was low, but I never let it hit red.

Further pressure tests indicated that there could be gasket problems, so I took it to Mitsubishi to investigate. After more than a month, and removing and sending the cylinder head away for analysis, the reply came back that the head was warped and could not be skimmed.

I was asked if I was sitting down, to which I replied "Yes!".

I was then told that the head needed replacing and the cost would be R84,000. The head alone was R44,000.

I only paid R125,000 for the vehicle.

Any constructive suggestions for me?

I am pretty sure you can get AMC heads for less than that. Maybe talk to an engineering shop. I had a full rebuild done on my old 2001 about 2 years ago for around R66000 but sadly it never was the same again.

I suggest you try the used parts outlets. I bought a replacement head for my Mark 1 at JAP Motor Spares in Kempton Park a few years ago. You will have to have it checked over - valves & guides etc but you may be able to use parts from your exisiting head.

Been there done that!
I see that you are in CPT. There is an Engineering shop in Bellville. He has new heads in stock for the Gen 3 DID. R7000 last time I checked. Tygerberg Engine rebuilders uses his heads as well if you want to inquire.

If you don't come right, let me know, I'll search through my archives. Should still have his details SOMEWHERE.

Hi sixmaniac

Thanks for the Tygerberg Engine Rebuilders tip.

I contacted them and they may be able to help.

Will let you know the outcome.

Hello C, I've got a extra cylinder head. My engineering shop made me buy a new one whilst the block was cracked. You can have it checked out first and fit it before you pay me if you are interested. I want R3000 for it. BUT you need to be happy and done about 5000 kilos's before you pay me. I stay in Standerton. 0826455081 Regards Casper
