Difficult to start when cold

Hi, I have just purchased a 1998 Pajero 2800 SWB GLX Intercooler Turbo diesel. It has 320000km and the engine was completely overhauled at 250000km. It has only recently struggled to start when cold. When it eventually starts there is a heavy puff of black smoke. What can I do to get it to start again on the first turn. Help will be appreciated.
Ian

Hi Ian, I had the same issue with my 3.2 a few weeks ago. Turned out the battery she had in when I bought her didn't have enough cold crank amps. Replaced it with higher rated one and starts first time in less than a second now. Maybe just check this first.

Check your glow plugs. just one on mine will result in that problem.
