Hi guys and girls. I hope you can help with this one. I recently bought a 2004 Pajero 3.8. When starting in the morning, it is difficult to get the Pajero to start. Battery is good. It just hesitates to start. What can I do to resolve the cold start issue?

Philip,
You need to help us out here. What are the symptoms?
Is the engine spinning slower?
Is the engine spinning same speed as when warm, but takes longer to fire up?
Does the engine fire up normally, but hesitates to run smoothly?
1) I have seen too many incorrect battery tests to believe any of them.
2) What is your car's service history? Replacing the spark plugs is a heck of a job, are you maybe sitting with problematic plugs?

Hi Roelf.
Thanks for the reply. The engine is spinning at the correct engine speed, but the engine seem to hesitate to fire up. When it do fire up it sounds as if it might be running on 2 or 3 cylinders only for e few seconds. The car do have a full service history although it has 265 000 km on the clock. When it is hot, there is no problem to start. I am not sure how this engines cold start is working as it is a drive by wire system

Hi guys
I have the same engine but mine is a 2005 model. Also started having slower and hesitant starting. Eventually didn't want to start at all on an intermittent basis.
Luckily I broke down in town when it finally all stopped working. I travel a lot for work in the Transkei so was relieved it didn't happen there.
My mech and I did some diagnosis work and tracked the problem to fuel supply. He fitted a new Bosch fuel pump and the problem went away. For a short while anyway. Started having the issue of hesitant starting again so he removed the fuel tank to flush it and at the same time time out the fuel pump assemly with filter etc.
When he remove dthat and inspected it he managed to get a lot of dirty black gunk to come out of the fuel pump and filter system.we checked with the stealers and they would only supply the whole contraption at a cost of R10 000.00
I didn't have that cash so told the mech to put it all back in (and change the fuel pump again just in case) and I would try and source my own filter. I did manage to get one through eBay at a total cost of about R1500
Marius Fourie from the forum is now assisting me by fitting the new filter. I will report back on any changes once I start driving with the new filter.
My suggestion would be to do both and get the new filter and fit a new fuel (was about R1000 for one of those if I remember correctly). Your sympstoms souond very similar to what mine were and replacing the fuel pump definitely drastically improved matters. However I believe that if you don't change the filter the problem will just come back again and you will sit with the same issue.
Well that's my 2c anyway and I hope it helps.
TC
