EGR Engine Light Pajero Gen 4

Hi all
I am posting this on behalf of a friend. He has a 2007 Gen 4 3.2 diesel Pajero with 210 000 km. The vehicle has a Dastek unichip and is serviced regularly. It was dynoed 3 months ago.

We blanked off the EGR about 2 years ago with no engine light or any other issues. About 2 weeks ago he got an engine light and I scanned it with my Launch Diagnostic tool. The error is P2413 EGR System. We checked the system and found a leaking gasket which was replaced and we removed the blanking plate but this did not fix the problem. I have also bridged out the Unichip but this also does not remove the engine light. Yesterday we took off the EGR valve again and I actuated the the valve at 0%, 50% and 100% using launch diagnostics tool with no response from the valve so i assume that the EGR valve stepper motor is no longer working.

Mitsubishi has recommended to use EGR valve and not to blank it off. They have quoted R6 000 for a new EGR valve.

Has anyone had this error before? How do I get rid of the engine light if we decide to blank it off again? Is there a cheaper replacement EGR valve available?

Regards

JohnDG

On the SA Gen 4-1 Pajero's we do not have an issue with the EGR being blanked off and causing the EMS light to be activated. The Australians have slightly different systems and do have such a problem. They overcome this by drilling a small hole in the blanking plate. My Gen 4-1 is blanked off (no hole drilled) and no lights have come on. I would believe that the ECU has identified a problem with the EGR valve. This is not a common issue with Gen 4-1's. I would suggest to try and locate a second hand unit. Try Parthunt in Pretoria. Keep us posted.

Johndg,
Please keep in mind that Mitsubishi MUST advise you to keep the EGR. It is one of the "environmental protection" devices and if they condone its removal, they will have even more trouble than just lying about fuel consumption.

I have 2007 Gen3 3.2 with egr blanked off, unichip fitted and cat stripped out. No engine light issues. So i dont think the light has to do with blanked off egr.

Hi Guys

Thank you for your responses.

We have run the pajero for a few days now without the blanking plate and we still have an engine light so drilling a small hole in the blanking plate will not work. We ran it blanked off and chipped for 2 years without an engine light or any issues.

I can only assume that the EGR stepper motor has broken and its now sending a fault code to the control unit. We have decided that we don't want to use the EGR but how do we get rid of the engine light? it must be possible somehow to program it out or fool the control unit.

I have sent the stepper motor to an electronics expert for testing or possible repair. A new secondhand unit is very hard to find. These Pajero's seem to last forever and don't end up on scrapyards often.

Johndg

Hi,

I get an check engine light (CEL) every now and then - I checked with an OBDII tool, and it is the EGR.

I think it is because the EGR valve is dirty / sticky. I believe that the EGR stepper motor is commanded to a certain position, but becasue of dirt, doesn;t always get there and the system has feedback (position sensor?) which indicates that the stepper motor didn;t reach re required position.

I need to clean the EGR and see if the problem will be solved.

If you keep the EGR blocked off, and want to get rid of the code, maybe you can try the "EGR resistor mod". This is a resistor that tricks the ECU into thinking that the temperature is too cold, and prevents the EGR from opening. This temperature sensor is only for the EGR, so doesn't affect anything else. So if your EGR is stuck closed, and the system never tries to open the EGR, then it might stop the EGR error from occurring?

Google "EGR resistor pajero", and you should get lots of info online.

Cheers,
Greg

Greg beat me to it. I also wanted to suggest the EGR resistor mod as a possible solution.

Anybody tried the mod in SA?

Hi Greg

Thanks for the advice. I have done the research and found the info and youtube video on Pajero Resistor Mod. Seems to be more common in Australia.

We will probably do it this weekend and Ill report back with the results.

Lets hope it works?

Regards,

Johndg.

Please keep us posted on what you install - particularly interested in the value of resister you go for, seems to be some debate on this - my previous Gen 3's intake got so gummed up that an EGR bypass is a must IMHO
