I am in the Isle of Man, UK. I have a 2006 Shogun/Pajero SWB 3.2 Did which squeals loudly on start up and stops usually within a minute. Once stopped the squealing does not happen again until the engine is stopped and restarted. Sometimes it doesn't happen at all.
I thought at first that it was a loose belt but as far as I can see without stripping everything off, the belts are tight.

Before stripping I thought it wise to ask the experts if I should be looking elsewhere.

Has anybody experienced this squealing? Your opinions would be appreciated.

My neighbour suggested that it sounds like a "stuck pig"!! I told him there was not enough room under the bonnet for a pig because of all the horses already there!!

There is a pulley on the fan belt tensioner that can start squealing if it is not the belts themselves. Q20 (or whatever penetrating oil) sprayed onto the pulley bearing will be the "Proof of the pudding"

Suggest you check the bearing of the tensioning pulley for the air conditioning compressor belt ; yes the Q20 will make the noise go away but when that bearing self destructs the damage to radiator etc can be impressive . Not too difficult to replace that bearing

I had exactly the same problem. Changed the 3 belts and everything eent back to normal.

The result is that I have to eat some humble pie!! I was under the impression that the belts were plenty tight enough, however when I adjusted them tighter the squeal went away.

I do think though that they are now too tight for comfort, probably because they have been slipping and shiny. I will replace all the belts in the very near future. I also checked my battery before the winter comes on and I find that it is getting weak when dead shorted with a tester. It is possibly another factor with regard to the belt squeal........ if the battery is weak, I assume the alternator will initially come under high load and thus give the belts an excuse to complain.

When the belts get older, their rubber becomes harder and starts to slip even if tensioned to the recommended value.
Start by changing the belts and see how it will be before going on to the tensioner.

Please assist me, I'm trying to remove the tensioner on a Pajero 3.8, 2008 model. I have removed the bolt but the tensioner does not budge. Should i wiggle or tap it? The tensioner pulley is dead but its one of those that come as a unit with the arm/tensioner itself.
