Pajero engine revving high
I have a 2001 Pajero 3.2 DiD (auto) with 286000km on the clock. I am currently touring Namibia. Today I noticed what appeared to be rough idling. I could hear it at the exhaust but not at the engine, and it also seemed better when revving slightly. Suddenly, while idling, the engine started to rev very high with black smoke coming from the exhaust. I managed to switch off the engine via the ignition switch.
Has anybody got any ideas on what the cause could be?
I am hesitant to try to start the engine again as I have read about people not being able to cut the engine.

Sjoe Japie.

Can't help you unfortunately but does not sound good. Maybe diesel mixing with the oil through a broken seal in the dieselpump? Have heard of that happening in the past. What does your oil level look like? Is it not fuller than expected and maybe lighter in colour, which might indicate diesel which mixed in there?

Re: Pajero engine revving high
If the oil seal in the turbo goes it can cause the mototlr to run away and self-destruct

Re: Pajero engine revving high
Bakkies, Cats, thanks for the feedback.

I had the vehicle towed to Midvaal Diesel in Swakopmund (fortunately my son was touring with me), where Kobus assisted despite his busy schedule (he was closing down that day for the Christmas season). Other than the broken pipe for the rear heater system (which we found earlier) he could not find any other fault. The oil was fine, no problem with the turbo. So after repairing the broken pipe and refilling the cooling system, I could continue my journey with no further issues. According to Kobus it is unlikely that the broken pipe could be the cause of the over revving of the motor. So somewhere that problem is still lurking and I will have the car checked out.
Re: Pajero engine revving high
Was it not maybe just running higher revs due to the aircon kicking in?

Maybe the rough idle was some filthy diesel or even the diesel pickup in the tank.

Glad it is running normal again but these things can bug you if you don't know the cause.
