3.2 did gen3 2006 140,000km black smoke...aai...

Hi guys.

Wondering if anyone can shed some light on this situation.

This is my second gen3, 3.2 so I know them quite well.

My pajero, Julius (because no hole is deep enough not to climb out of) had his turbo redone rather well in June here in Cape Town...the old one had a leak on the waste gate so the whole thing was completely reconditioned.

I've checked boost, when the vehicle is floored it jumps to 1,2 bar instantly but immediately drops down to about 0,8 bar which I believe is correct....at 3000rpm under load Julius starts smoking big Cuban cigars and the vehicles behind me because in a cloud of nasty sticky diesel fumes...

The vehicle has zero error codes. I've reset the ecu and driven close on 400km in various conditions, towing, not towing etc...it runs like silk...even when under load..however the black smoke is frieking me out....

I'm going to be undertaking the installation of an egt and boost gauge within the next 7 days so I can see more clearly?

Anyone got any ideas...This is puzzling me...why would it be over fuelling...? It runs as smooth as silk in all conditions, fuel consumption almost identical to the last pajero...which I lovingly owned for four years to stupidly sell it and buy an amarok (yugg devil's seed never again)...no strange idling, or starting issue or anything at all...no power loss...just black smoke...I took the egr system off and cleaned that completely...still smoke...maybe I should just blank egr?

Any advice please...

I also experienced some smoke and perhaps you can also benefit from this experience. My 3.2 Did 2000 model does not smoke in nutral or park. But idling in drive or R a lot of black smoke. Driving however on higher revs and not stessing the enjin delivers no smoke.

I can mention the pump and injectors are 10000 km old.

I belief Dwain from Randburg diesel has turned my head in the right direction. There is a sticking exhaust valve.
We will investigate this week.

Interested to hear the outcome... I would expect a sticking valve to be accompanied by a power loss and/or misfiring - especially at idle.
I think the following is more likely...
I believe (?) that the electronically controlled injector pump in the (pre common rail) 3.2 DiD have a limited self adjusting capability. My 2004 certainly seems to have. It is possible that the waste gate issue may have caused the pump to go out of calibration. If so that will almost certainly cause the black exhaust smoke. My suggestion is to get the pump tested and recalibrated. BUT... her is the problem - I think only Alan Black Diesel in Springs - Gauteng has the necessary equipment to do so. And removing the pump is a bitch.

Possibly call Alan Black (speak to Eric) 011-811 3490

They specialize in these injector pumps - He may be able to advise.

Hope you come right!

And definitely blank off the EGR... its easy to do and eliminates that possibility.

Thanks.

I don't have any power loss, it pulls like a beast.

Black smoke, since post, has dramatically dropped off. I've just installed a boost gauge, and egt...egt probe not connected though, will do next weekend if I have a moment.

If the egt's are normal, and boost is normal (which it currently is...at least boost i can see right now) ...I think is probably something more simple like the egr (which after taking off and cleaning I've seen the smoke)...so I'll be blanking egr next week too and then imagine this problem will vanish entirely.

The vehicle gets 11,09L/100km on average, it pulls like a monster, has 148,000km...I don't think it's the pump...my last gen3 had 343,000 when I sold it and was pulling strong...

I'll post once egr blank done.

Thanks

I have the 3.2 2008 model with 160 000km. I had similar problem withblack smoke. After replacing the MAF sensor at R8000 no success. Long story short. We , dealer discovered the smoke is due to using sinthetic oil. After changing the oil to conventional oil as specified by Mitchibushi the smoke wS gone.

Hi.
I only use delo400, interestingly I had read (must have been your post about the oil) as it had gone to have its turbo redone (first I cut the CAT out), and they did an oil change...admittedly (blush) my wife drive the car almost entirely for months and the first time I drove it, I have it some stick and puffing smoke....so I did another oil change and put delo400 in and some mostly gone, then I.opened egr system and cleaned it but at same time noticed inlet manifold was gunked up something terrible, I literally stuck my finger in several times (sounds bad) and pulled out a ball of black grease !! I don't have the experience to fiddle with inlet manifold so have it on my list for my mechanic to clean...I will however blank egr...I think some of the terrible black smoke could have been from this area?

Not too sure. Although at max boost it does smoke, briefly, but then clears after that to clean (normal diesel engine under load)

Anyway, I'll post again after I've done egr to note any changes...and what my egt readings and boost readings are for interest.

Hi All

UPDATE:

1. Egr system removed, I had 6mm plates made which I mounted over the holes left behind.

2. Boost gauge installed

3. Egt gauge installed

Everything running smoothly, pretty much black smoke gone. Egt never exceed 600degrees C under load and full boost.

I'm happy. Goodbye EGR.
