2000 Gen 3 3.2 :Rough running when motor is warm.

Hi , I have been scouring the web regarding rough idling when hot, but none of the symptoms are quite like I have.
When cold , the motor starts and runs smoothly through the revs, but when at operating temp there is a distinct misfire.
Wathing the motor in Neutral or Park, it will rock on its mountings , and it is evident as the revs pick up to around 2200rpm. At this point it sounds fine, and does not rock on the mountings. If I drive up a hill at anything below 2200rpm ( with the window open) , there is a distinctive clatter, the frequency sounding like one pot missing or pre- igniting, I am not sure.
Driving is not impeded it seems at higher RPM , i have no issues at highway speeds , I just don't know whether the momentum of the flywheel masks this misfire at higher revs.
I dont have clouds of smoke, cutting out or anything going wrong whilst driving, the only issue I see is a bit of white smoke when idling for a while , and sometimes a distinct paraffin smell from the exhaust.
I cannot say if my power is down , it still seems to pull quite strongly .

Could this be an injector sticking when hot in it's first stage of operation, or also the speed sensors on the pump?
Any takers?

Hi, all I can add is that I have a similar problem on my 3.2 Did 2002 model with 250 000 km on the clock. When running from cold its runs perfectly but as soon as it warms up, a misfire develops and the engine loses power and belches black diesel smoke. At this point the engine warning light comes on and the rev counter dances about with the engine running very roughly. If you shift into neutral at this point and switch off, it shuts down fine, on restating the engine just leaps to red-line without touching the throttle. You have to switch off quickly to prevent engine damage, leaving the car off for about 10 minutes and then restarting it idles fine until you pull off drive for a minute or two, then the whole cycle repeats itself. The diagnostic equipment showed a boost pressure sensor fault, replacing this part has not made any difference.

The brakes failed at one point with the warning alarm (audible) being triggered, replacing the two from speed sensors at the wheels seems to have cured this, but the engine problem still persists.

Did you find out what was causing your dilemma?

All the best

Ted

Is this happening at idle when warm? Did you check the idle butterfly. Why I am saying this is the screw that you can adjust on the butterfly fell out on my 3.2 did and I had to replace the screw. If the screw is in to far in it will close the butterfly to much resulting in black smoke on warm idle . Less air more diesel when you press the throttle it's fine but on idle with and without aircon on its a problem.

Just check the screw. I could be wrong but this is what I have experienced. Please don't adjust if the screw looks fine. I have now added locktyte on the screw not to adjust itself. Check somewhere on the forum for the correct operation on the warm idle butterfly.

Also do a search for idle relearn procedure if you had your battery disconnected. Not sure if it's for your model think it's on the Ausie site. Just search on Google.

Hi, I'm experiencing the same and this happened recently when I was driving uphill. Three months back I replaced all 4 injectors, new turbo and manifold, boost sensor, two (2) diesel pump sensors, diesel pump calibration and did lubricant service and filters. Still with all the above, every morning the car puffed out white/green smoke when cold for few minutes when revs are over 1500rpm. When engine warms smoke will fade out but still puffs when revving higher.

This is happening to date and have consulted more than 4 different technicians (specialists) but no satisfactory diagnostic has been given. Topping all these the sudden misfire when engine is warm and rough idling after driving for a while. I always use 50ppm diesel and never 10ppm or even 500ppm.

Any ideas?

Sibusiso
