Cracked Cylinder Head or blown head gasket - next step?
My mechanic gave me the wonderful news that either my head is cracked or gasket blown - this after overheating problems, similar to other posts here.

Having read some of the horror stories of how a piston blows after a head replacement, I am thinking I should just buy a reconditioned motor - R35k from Jap Auto or a reconditioned motor from the Mitsu Spares place in Pretoria for the same price.

Any thoughts on this?

Just some more info - I have a 2002 Gen 3 Pajero with 356,000 km on the clock.

Sorry to hear that.
Was there something that caused the engine to overheat (eg a leak) or did the engine just start overheating ? Any chance of a 2nd opinion ?

Once the head is removed you can see whether it is a head gasket or a cracked head. Then you can get a quote and make a call.
Obviously they must give you a guarantee and ensure you experience no more overheating or other problems. Make sure they are a big professional company.

4M40 (2.8) or 4M41 (3.2)?

I have not been able to find a Jap import of the 4M41 in the last few months.

Re: Cracked Cylinder Head or blown head gasket - Update
So with the advice of my mechanic, I decided to take the conservative route and check all the cooling systems before getting to the head. Been quite a journey! So far he has replaced the radiator, water pump and the thermostat as all seemed to have problems. The radiator had a small crack at the bottom, the water pump had a leak, and the thermostat wasn't working - didn't open up at 78 degrees as it is supposed to. In the process fixed an oil leak on the oil pressure sensor. Cost for all this about R8,200.00

The head is now off and at engineering - it is warped and has been skimmed. Also replacing the exhaust valve stem guides as these were badly worn.

Hope to get the head back today and assembly can start. Cost not yet known! :?

"The Beast" is back and working well! Cylinder Head skimmed and exhaust valve guide replacement done and she is running cool and smooth. Cost for this piece was about R7,000 - so total cost to refurb the cooling systems and have the head skimmed was R15,000 - good value I think. Helps to have a friend in the East Rand!

Will be taking the Beast to Magaliesburg this weekend for a gentle run - looking forward to a relaxed weekend with a Pajero!
