Engine Noise // Consumption - Gen 3 DiD
Just taken the 'new to me' Pajero on a trip through Kruger to get a feel for it. A couple of things have come up:

1. Up mountain passes and steep hills with full load (inc venter trailer) the engine seems to get a strange sound (squeak similar to a loose belt, difficult to describe) at high revs before it changes and its gone when in the next gear until the revs are high again. I only noticed this after filling up, 500ppm diesel at a big station - will the quality of diesel cause the engine to make different sounds?

2. Consumption - what is the normal consumption at crusing speed (120km/hr) reasonably loaded, so far it seems I am getting around 12 l/100km, which is a bit higher than I was hoping for, even cruising at 45km/hr in the park only improved it to 11 l/100km. I have BFG A/ts fitted will this make a difference?

Just to add that I came within a litre of empty before the fill up...looking at JDV's post - injectors?
Re: Engine Noise // Consumption - Gen 3 DiD
  • "full load"
  • "Venter trailer"
  • "120 km/h"
  • 12 l/100km
Wow!

Show me the vehicle that can improve on that!
I think that is what you can expect.
Stop-start (KNP) with a 3t brick never returns very good consumption.

How high do you take the rpm? I never exceed 3500 rpm with my Di-D.
The noise could be the turbo (its normal, don't panic!).

Fair enough, perhaps its a case of never believing a salesman...

I am interested to hear what consumption people get open road and around town in the Gen 3 DiD...

Re: Engine Noise // Consumption - Gen 3 DiD
Hi

I have had my 2000 3.2DI-D now for 2 months and consumption is reasonable good. Travelling down from JHB at 120 km/h CC, I got 10.5 km/l. When towing my Raven (loaded) at 125km/h, I got 8km/l and at 110km/h, I got 8.7 km/l.

I was quite happy with this as my previous, hilux 2.7, was a real gas guzzler, even with Dastek chip and free flow exhaust at around 7km/l no load and 4.5 km/l when towing

What is the size of those BFG's? Most BFG's are slightly higher profile than standard size on the Pajero Gen 3. This will in effect change your speedo slightly and give a 'false' reading if this was used to calculate consumption and also comparing it to other similar vehicles with std size tyres on. On mine it made a 10% difference compared to before I had them fitted. If everyone used GPS distance to calculate consumption you would see a lot of red faced salespeople once the inacuracy of speedometers are revealed.

Re: Engine Noise // Consumption - Gen 3 DiD
Hi

I have 265/75R16 BFG A/T tyres on my SWB 2002 DiD Auto.

Over the last 22 000km I have averaged 8.36km/l (11.96l/100km). This is including all driving terrains, city, highway and even some dunes.
My normal cruising speed is 120km/h.

One of my friends drives a 2001 SWB. He had road 265/70R16 road tyres on and had a manual transmission, he averaged just over 10km/l

Re: Engine Noise // Consumption - Gen 3 DiD
Thanks guys

Cats - yes they are oversize 275 75 17 (as opposed to 70), im almost dead on with the GPS (maybe 1 or 2km out) a colleague has standard tyres and reads 120 on gps when doing 129, so I agree definitely explains almost 10% "higher" consumption.

The national average, as per my Standard Bank Fleet Management Report, is 11.8l/100km for the Gen3 Di D Auto.

Re: Engine Noise // Consumption - Gen 3 DiD
Now I am even more impressed with the 12l/100km the 3.8V6 gave me on the open road with a full load and a full trailer. The big difference to the 3.2DiD is with town driving and slow "work". Town driving gives me about 15 to 16l/100km and in the Richtersveld that increased to more than 20l/100km. That is when the diesel really comes to the party.
