My 2007 Pajero (279k on the clock) picked up an error recently. Started with the ASC light coming on and later the engine light came on. It would sometimes reset itself, but as soon as the vehicle was driven hard or under load the lights would come on again. Various solutions were picked up from some of the forums, but didn't really resolve the problem.

This week we cleaned the EGR and inlet manifold (including MAP sensor and plumbing) - vehicle must have been suffering from severe asthma! Enormous amounts of carbon and gunk was removed from the inlet manifold! I plugged the OBDII monitor I received from my sons as a b/day gift, to reset the error codes. Lights still come on, but we noticed that as soon as the turbo starts spooling past about 65psi(?) it flat lines - no boost. I am assuming that points to a faulty MAP sensor?

Where can one find a reliable second hand MAP sensor in the Western Cape (Swellendam). Is it worth fitting a used one? They are quite expensive new. Maybe someone out there can advise if I'm on the right track? Presently I'm driving a normally-aspirated 3.2 DiD!

Also, I aim to blank off the EGR. Good idea or not?

Hi guys. After getting a lot of conflicting and vague prices from Mitsu, my son suggested I should try MIDAS, which I did. Was quoted R630 including courier costs. The part was delivered within 2 days to my hometown Swellendam.

The part is a EUROMANN part, supplied by MasterParts in Cape Town. The part looks exactly the same as the original part (see photo). I reset all the error codes, using the ODBII tool, and disconnected the battery for at least 30 minutes prior to fitting the new part. Part fitted, takes about 5 minutes, I started the vehicle and let her get to normal operating temperature before taking her out for a run. MY OLD RELIABLE IS BACK!! Pulls like a freight train again, and MAP pressure goes over 183 (previously would go into limp over 61). Nice to be able to hill climb as normal.

The part cost me R630 compared to R3260 (lowest from Mitsu), and I can attest that it works like normal. Now all that is left is blocking off the EGR to stop the gunk from building up in the inlet manifold again.

How did you know it was the MAP sensor.My 3.5 idle fine but under slight load it jerks could it be the MAP sensor.A mechanic told me it is a sensor .It will be appreciated if you can advise me

I had similar issues with a RAV4 , I managed to diagnose the issue by removing power , pulled the MAP sensor and cleaning it with surgical spirits . When refitting make sure it is completely dry and don’t brush the sensors with anything (I place it in a bag and made sure the spirits ran through the sensor)
I refitted and the problem was temporarily fixed , eventually you will have to replace but this is great for diagnostic

I received a OBDII sensor for my birthday (nice sons!), and that is how I diagnosed it. You can block it off and try it without the sensor, but DO NOT MAKE IT PERMANENT!! It will damage your engine if left blocked off!!

As I said in my post a new sensor is relatively cheap (around R600, as long as you don't buy from the agents). And it works. I have not had a problem with it since replacing.

It could also be the MAF sensor, which controls the air-flow and is fitted on the air filter. That can be sprayed clean with Spanjaard contact cleaner. But be careful it has "hairs" inside that gauge the airflow and can be damaged easily - don't put anything down there. My Paj would also stutter, especially on start-up, and spraying that out helped enormously. MasterParts will also have that in stock at a fraction of the Agents price.
