5-year/270 000km Service
Hey guys!

Havnt posted here in a while!

My trusty 2009 3.2 DiD hasn't been to any kind of workshop in the last three years - I've been doing 10 000km oil and filter changes religiously, but that's about it for the last 50-60 000km or more. It now developed a low-speed engine clatter recently after being parked for a couple of weeks, and has had a cold start smoking habit for a while. With almost 270 000 on the clock it is probably worth taking in for a once over.

I was thinking to get the following done:
  • Lube service with all filters and belts
  • See if computer diagnostics will still recognise the car
  • Inspect important bits
  • Replace transmission fluid
  • Check out clatter and smoke (timing chain guide? injectors?)
  • Fix centre diff flashing lights (can't believe I've lived with this for 6 years already!)

Did I miss anything for a once-in-a-lifetime visit to a repair shop?

Thanks!

Hi Scubadude

I have a 2007 GEN4 DiD with 280k on the clock, and mine developed a boost problem with the turbo (see posting elsewhere) needless to say the purchasing of a new MAP sensor sorted out the problem.

However, and I think you should maybe consider this, while trying to diagnose the problem I removed the INLET manifold, and was shocked to see the amount of gunk in it. It all comes from the EGR, which most people in Aus and SA block off. It is a half-day job to remove the manifold (if you are mechanically inclined) and to remove the gunk. I used a carb cleaner to loosen the gunk up, and it works a treat. Took me longer to remove the gunk and get the manifold all shiny and new again, than to remove and install it again. My baby has quite a bit more oomph now.

Just saying.

Thanks DD! Something I will definitely DIY shortly. Could you perhaps share the Youtube link you followed (on the assumption you did)?

Got my car back from Mitspro this morning and Freek did a good job. Replaced gearbox oil and filter (which was filthy), as well as diff and transfer case oil. The car drives like new again!

Turns out the clattering noise, morning smoke and generally sluggish driving resulted from fueling issues (negative lead to the Diesel Torque chip wasn't reconnected by panel beaters last month). The disco lights, apparently, were caused by a broken sensor wire on the front axle .. will drive a thousand clicks this weekend to see if that is also now permanently fixed.

If you search for "pajero inlet manifold cleaning" you'll get a lot of vids that will show you what to expect, and how to clean it. Mostly from Aus, where the Paj is extremely popular. Don't forget to clean the EGR Valve as well. The whole process is rather messy, but worth it. There are a lot of carb cleaners on the market, I found them to work better that engine cleaners. At some time, think of blocking off the EGR completely to stop it building up again. I fashioned a gasket from a piece of 3mm sheet metal.

All the best! Enjoy the ride!
