The 4x4 switches are working, the car does go into ALL the 4 Wheel Drive gears, however when going into 4 wheel drive it start off ok then there is a type of loud squeaking noise its in all the gears. When the car is in 2 wheel drive occasionally there is also a loud 'squeaking' noise and then if you slow down just before the car comes to a stop there is a loud thud noise (you can feel it as well) , sounds like gears that are disengaging . Please can you guys give me some feed back on what is wrong and what needs to be done to fix the problem.

I had an issue with a gen 2 many years ago - eventually Transfer Case had to be replaced, completely destroyed. Before I bought car a less clever mechanic replaced the original Pajero rear diff with a Colt bakkie diff, different gear ratios. So check the tyres L & R hand sides to be same size and also back front.
However due to problem being there in 2x4 and 4x4 it is perhaps not the transfer box but something else. Gearbox perhaps.
With the problem I had, the car ran perfectly from 1/2 way down Ouberg Pass near Sutherland to Some-West
