Hello everyone, my name is Ben from Honduras in Central America. I need your support on a decision I must take, my Montero/Pajero DI-D 3.2 2002 is almost dead and I want to see the option to change the engine to a 6G74(3.5) or 6G75 (3.8), my question is: Is it possible to put a 6G75 on a 2002 model? and is it a big difference in performance between 6G74 and 6G75? what are the advantages or disadvantages of both engines? I know I´will find great advice here. Thank you!!! :D

Hello Ben,

I suppose anything is possible as long as your pocket is deep enough. I'm old school, I don't dislike Diesels, I'm more comfortable with Petrol. I prefer my cars to run from the Right side of the pump, not the Dark Side.
I have the 3.8 SWB. Not exactly light on its feet, but I have had 10 liters/100km on a run to the coast and 13 liters/100 kms if I cruise at the limit. Do not buy the Petrol if consumption is going to be an issue. I owned both the Kawasaki KH 500 and 750 Triple Motorcycles in the early 70's.
Try 20 mile to the gallon, on a 3.5 gallon fuel tank. it wasn't air-cooled, it was petrol cooled. great fun, but on an apprentices wage, not good, my Father was forced to subsidise me. I'm fortunate now, to have a company car so the fuel bill doesn't bother me, as the Pajero is my weekend toy.

For me, that V6 wins hands down, so smooth with lots of grunt. You pay your money and you take your chance. Maybe some other people on the site can give their view on the Diesel side of the argument.

Benjie Man,

Simple advice: If you can get a 3.8 in good condition, do NOT even consider the 3.5. The 3.8 is bigger, uses about the same amount of fuel and has much more grunt. Try and get the joining auto gearbox and all the loose odds and ends such as cooler pipes, radiator etc if they differ from the 3.5 as well. Give both a good and full service and you are set for many happy kilos.

Thank you both!!! I really appreciate your experience. :)

Now, anybody would know if peripheral components as radiator, air conditioning, starter motor, alternator, are the same in a 3.8 as in the DI-D? :?

As the actress said to the Bishop, "That's a hard one".
