2WD HI vs 4WD HI
I have heard in discussion and read on this forum that its better and safer to use 4WD HI than 2WD HI on dry tarmac. However the Pajero Sport manual says DO NOT do this - Any views on this topic ?

Re: 2WD HI vs 4WD HI
Hello,
The only time I have used 4 Wheel high on the road was in the Torrential rain on the South Coast Road in March 2020. it definitely "sat" better on the road in those conditions, at 50 kms/hour, it was madness to try and go faster. But Darwin and the law of physics caught out at least 4 cars/bakkies, on their roof or into the embankment. I would ask what are the implications are from the factory, the only thing I can think of is the increased fuel consumption.

Re: 2WD HI vs 4WD HI
I have read many, many times (and it is also recommended by Mitsubishi) to use 4 High on gravel road.
It is supposed to give you better stability when hitting some soft spots or in bends....
I drove a SWB Gen 3 in Namibia for =/- 2500 km in 4High and never had experienced a "developing" situation , either on zinc plate or in sandy bends. The Pajero behaved beautifully ....
So, what behaves differently when driving 4H on gravel or on tar?????
The only reservation I have would be NOT TO DRIVE FASTER THAN 100 or 110 with 4High ON TAR.
After all, the Pajero 4wheel drive is A SELECTIVE MODE BUT NOT AN ALLWHEEL DRIVE, like for example on Audi or similar SUVS...

Good afternoon all
You cannot believe the confusion surrounding this issue. The drivers manual of my 2015 Pajero Sport say's expressly that 4HI should never be used on a tar road. So who's right and who's wrong ?

My Pajero 2020 LWB on the other hand I drive in 4HI all the time on tar roads - The manual says that its also ok to do so.
So the question is why is it ok with the Pajero but not the Pajero Sport - same gearbox are they not ?

4H - same as awd
4HLc - only for gravel or worse (not tar)
I drive my pajero in 4H all the time. Way above 100km/h. You just cant select the mode when above 100kmh.
I tested and as far as I could tell, 2H and 4H saw no marked fuel economy difference.
The front diff and associated dri etrain is turning anyway in 2H but powered by the wheels turning, not the engine powering them.

Re: 2WD HI vs 4WD HI
Why would you drive on good tar in 4WD H ???? To be prepared for some eventualities ????
I think that would be the wrong approach. The right approach would be to adjust your speed in accordance with road conditions.
To drive on tar in 4WD H is to me the same as driving a bit more reckless because you have Antiskid and / or ABS .
The Pajero is configured as a SELECTIVE 4 WHEEL DRIVE and not a ALL WHEEL DRIVE.
I see different design parameters in these two systems with regard to wear and tear / cooling and dimensioneering of the various drive elements .

Re: 2WD HI vs 4WD HI
Oberlix and John and others,
My 2cents worth. You can drive in 4H till the cows come home. The question is: Is there a need for it? When I pull my Desert Wolf Leo on tar or gravel, I drive in 4H. It gives a marked more stable ride. If it is wet, then I consider 4HL - pending on the surface. On gravel, no question: 4hL, on WET tar that seems to be less sticky the same - 4HL - and as soon as conditions/ (traction IMPROVES, back to 4h.
