Parking brake light constantly on

Mon Nov 18, 2024 8:38 am

Good morning

I had an upsetting afternoon after what I thought would be an easy fix turned out naught...
My parking brake light on the dash of my 3-door 1993 Pajero MK2 never turns off. i didn't think this is a big deal, but it was annoying me, so I openend my central console to adjust the sensor by the parking brake. It turned out to be a spring-loaded mechanism that grounds a little wire to the car body under normal circumstances, ie when the parking brake IS engaged and it lights the dash light up. When you lower the hand brake, this mechanism separates the wire from the metal and insulates it with a 2mm air gap essentially, unfortunately when I inspected, nothing looked wrong. I tried to trace the wire to see if it was shorting or grounding itself somewhere else along its way to the dash but to no avail.

Any help with regards to the electrical system that control these light and what else could be wrong would be helpful, I have very limited experience but am studying Engineering and am a quick learner.

Friendly regards and many thanks
Christian Kotzé

Hi Christiaan,

I have the same issue on my 2001 Pajero. I also checked the hand brake switch which seems fine.

I think it can be one of 2 things: PC board behind speedo, or one of the connectors that connects the speedo cluster to the female plugs behind the speedo. Not sure how your Gen 2 speedo works, but it might work on the same principle.

One other thing is the sensor inside the brake fluid reservoir. Mine is so tucked away that I cannot get it off. Yours will be easier the remove and check.

Good luck
