ABS / ASC lights stay on

Tue Jan 11, 2022 6:02 pm

Good day everyone. My first post here after lurking for a few months. Not sure if this belongs here or in electrical...

I'm at a loss....

I bought my 2004 3.2 LWB (280,000km) 4 months ago. After driving 2000km with no issues, I had the cv joints replaced, and shortly after leaving the workshop my ABS and ASC lights illuminated. This has lead me to a 4 month struggle. So here is where I am now.

Took it to have faults read with diagnostic tool, and FL wheel speed sensor had had erratic behaviour. I put in a new sensor, took it back to have the errors cleared with the diagnostic tool. 3 days later the errors returned.

I took it in again and left it at the workshop for a week. They can't find the problem. The only error that appears is FL wheel speed sensor. When the error is cleared using the MUTII the sensor reads fine, however the moment the error returns the sensor reads zero. Clear the error and all fine again till it suddenly comes back.

When errors are cleared traction control and abs works fine...then Christmas tree and nothing works...

They tested continuity from sensor to the ECU, which is fine. However he said he can't see a signal come out from the ECU to the other modules (I suspect from ABS ECU to speak to ASC ECU).

He says he cannot help any further, the diagnostic tool only gives so much info, and referred me to an auto elec.

Before I go further down this bottomless pit I thought I'd ask for some advice...

(Additional info: speedo and tacho is stuck on zero when I start and drive off. Most of the time it suddenly jumps up and reads fine, however lately it's been stuck at zero and hasn't worked when I was driving. Cruise control doesn't work either. But no errors come up referring to VSS).

I'm in Port Elizabeth...is there anyone around here who is a pro with these vehicles who might be able to shed light???

Problem solved.

I asked contacted Mr. Pajero in Australia, and he pointed me to the tone ring (reluctor ring / ABS ring) on the outer CV. Took me 2mins to jack up the vehicle and turn the wheel, and within seconds I spotted the broken teeth on the ring.

A&B Diff and Gearbox helped me out by sourcing a used ring from an old CV, and problem solved. The error cleared by itself, and I am smiling ear to ear!

Sounds like the garage that worked on your CV joints must have caused the damage to the teeth. That means you had the sensors changed for nothing. It really annoys me when repair centers only look for a problem by plugging in a computer instead of having a good old look and listen.

I battled for quite a while with my traction lights flashing after driving in 4x4 on wet tar roads for a period of time only to discover uneven wear on my tyres. Simple solution to what could have been an expensive exercise.

I had the Christmas tree of ABS lights on my 07 Paj, and the stealers charged R800 for diagnosing a faulty sensor, and quoted about R5, 400 for an out of stock replacement. Enough is enough - I put out an RFQ through Alibaba, got a response from a specialist sensor company in China, who had a minimum order quantity of five units, and a couple of weeks later I installed a perfectly matched and working sensor for a delivered cost of one-twenty-seventh of the stealer's quote!
