Dear All, i have struggled for quite some time with this problem, reserched many threads and cant find a diagnosis. Problem: There is a Cluck cluck and more cluck coming from the passanger side front hub area. i as well as two machanics were certain it is a warn C.V. so this was replaced but the problem persits. The factors which influence this is: only when the 4 x4 is engadged and when the wheels are under load / torque or spinning due to lack of tracktion like when in sand or going up loose gravel incline. The sound does have a increased frequency when going slower or faster, so it seem to be conected to the diff, cv and hub moving parts. has any body ever had or heard of such a problem.
Kind Regards
Pajero 3.5
if the cv boots aren't torn, chances are it isn't the cv joints. That's bad news as it may be some play in the diff with a chipped tooth.
drain the front diff oil and pour it through a strainer to look for iron filings or pieces. Refill with GL-5 spec oil.

Thanks 4e, the C.V and both boots are new, two weeks old. if its not the C.V is the only other option the diff and a brocken tooth. Have you heard of this happening before, what could cause this if so.?
I have been advised that it could be the Transfer Chain in the transfer box does a pajero have one of these, as the person who advised this had this problem on a hardbody.
the pajero has a chain as well but I haven't heard of those failing.Pajero 3.5 wrote:I have been advised that it could be the Transfer Chain in the transfer box does a pajero have one of these, as the person who advised this had this problem on a hardbody.
I have heard of at least one instance where the drive chain in the transfer box of a Gen 2 was worn to the extent that it slipped, but this is not common at all.
Another possibility is that the front axle disconnect device (a pneumatically activated coupling that can disconnect the right hand side front side shaft from the front diff) is not coupling the front axle fully, perhaps due to a vacuum leak or dirt build-up.

Thanks Gerrit, your a great source of knowlage, im going to have a look for those vacum pipes and see what i can find. This wouls explain what it has not happened atall on some trails and badly on others. Just one question b4 i jump in, if there is a leak that is not allowing the connect device to funtion correctly, would this then only cause the cluck cluck whilst the car is under load and the wheels are spinning.
4e, i think the guy who was speaking about the chain was sayinh that it can become worn and then slip under laod. this is also the first ive heard of this. But im no expert though, that's why i ask the pro's, hence the Post.
I think it could. If traction is lost at the rear axle while the front still has good grip, more torque could be transmitted via the front axle than if both axles were contributing equally and this could possibly make a partially engaged disconnect device slip. It remains a theory, though.Pajero 3.5 wrote:Just one question b4 i jump in, if there is a leak that is not allowing the connect device to funtion correctly, would this then only cause the cluck cluck whilst the car is under load and the wheels are spinning.

Gerrit, i just checked the two vacum pipes on either side of the actuator, the one has good suction when in 2x4 and the other side has the suction when the 4x4 is engadged. i supose thats how the actuator works with the vacuum. i have not checked the engade switch as is does engadge and disengadge fine, so i asume this is fine. Im going to take it for a test to see if i can make the noise reapear, if its still there, should i drain the front driff and open the inpection cover to check for broken tooth. ?
