95 or 93 Unleaded And Castrol Oil???
Hi Guys,
Maybe a little bit of advice?
I have a 99 Blister Fender 3.5L and would like to know a few things?
What would be the best fuel to use in this vehicle. I would normally use Sasol but a friend suggested Shell V Power 95 unleaded. Can this work efficiently or should I use 93 Unleaded or Sasol Low Sulphur?????
Question 2 : I noticed a while ago mention was made to Delo 400 oil but Mitspro suggested Shell Helix High Mileage.
The Shell Helix I could find was a 20w-60 so I opted for Castrol High Mileage 20w-50 . I do have a lifter or two that is a bit noisy but not for long after startup. Is this oil a good choice?
Question 3: Is there a quick fix for the butterfly valve in my manifold without removing it and having to incure quite a amount of work and expenses relating. What damage can incurr should I not fix it ? as it is sucking quite a lot of air clearly audible from front of engine. I know it messes with the airflow and monitor and also messes with fuel consumption.
Any gurus with self made plans out there with advice????

Kind Regards

The grade of fuel is one of those points that you would have to try and then decide for yourself. My 3l runs well with v power but better with caltex lrp and with my platkar the only fuel that I can run without it detonating is vpower.

Oil is a touchy subject and often more volatile than religion but the nuts and bolts of it is that dello is a very good oil and so is castrol hi mileage. I prefer to use castrol edge10-60 and have had brilliant results in both my turbo plat karre and the pajero and even bad some very positive feedback from diesel owners. The main point is that you are using a decent oil and not one of those R50-00 / 5l excuses. Castrol has good detergent properties as well as all of the other features one would expect of a premium quality oil so keep a check on the color of the oil and do a change if it starts to look bad. It would clean a lot of deposits from the engine for the first few oil changes so it might be necessary to change oil sooner than the recommended interval.

In my 3l I had the lifters rattling and when I changed to edge I overfilled by 500ml and that put a stop to the party.

If you can hear a hissing sound it means that you have an air leak, the pajero butterfly shaft is not renown for excessive wear. You can use a bit of tubing to pinpoint the source of the sound or if that does not work a can of quick start sprayed on the joints and seals would indicate the point of leakage by causing the engine to increase the revs just do not smoke while using the quick start.
To overhaul the throttle body other than cleaning it with something like power tune from quick silver or something similar is beyond the scope of the normal diy person as this would more often than not involve bushing the throttle body and replacing the butterfly shaft.

I changed to Delo 400 with my last service, and over-filled by 500ml, and my lifters were quiet for 2000 km. Now they tick for a second, and I will not hear them till next cold start.

Check your outlet manifold for cracks - they are more suceptible for cracks, and also makes a hissing sound. Those heat sinks do not help to prevent this...

If the butterfly valve isfaulty, I suggest MITSPRO!

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the replies and it seems that choice of oil was the correct one for now. Will monitor it .
I will take my car to Mitspro to have the manifold butterfly have a look at.

What oil did you decide on, i must also do something as i also have lifters going crazy, the last change was done with crap.

As far as the butterflies are concerned, mine did the same, So fortunately i had a good contact with a Mitsu mechanic so he removed them for me. Not such a big job, you can find instructions on the net. I then took the assembly to my local engineering shop and three hours and R500 later all the bushes were replaced.

You can also try CRD in Germiston, they take in your damaged assembly and give you a repaired assembly at a cost of R1900.00. They will probably be able to fit it as well.

If you do not fix this, your motor CO2 will be high as their is air sucked in the system, not measured by the air flow sensor.

Do yourself a favour and try Delo400, and overfill by 500ml. I couldn't believe the difference.

I firtsly flushed the engine.

Mitspro also recommended a high milage oil. I use Delo 400, no lifter noise.
I had the bush at the inlet manifold replaced by Mitspro. Could also hear the air being sucked in. My 3.5 is now on average 3 liter per 100 km's lighter on fuel! Do it. Only one bush and that is at the side where the actuator sits at the front of the engine. I was present when he took the old bush out. The was not any bush left! Mitspro replaced it with a brass/copper bush. No more air sucking noises, and as said, the Paj is lighter on fuel now. More drivable too!

Re: 95 or 93 Unleaded And Castrol Oil???
I had the same question regarding the ’93 and ’95 fuel about 3 months ago. After considering the (sometimes conflicting) opinions, advice and experience from previous owner, I have decided to use ’95 unleaded in my 1996 Pajero 3.5 V6. No problems experienced up to now. With 4 adults and keeping to the speed limits (according to the “real” GPS speed) with AC, the open road average fuel consumption is ca 8km/L. In town it drops to about 5-7km/L. I only use 20W-50 helix oil.
