Hi,
The back door on my Gen 3 is rattling. I think the sound is originating from the door catch.
The door used to squeak, but a quick clean of all door rubbers used to remedy this. More recently, a rubber clean didn't work so in frustration I sprayed the door catch with Q20.
After the Q20 spray there is no squeak, but rather a rattle. When the door is closed it feels solid, but when driving there is a definite rattle.
Any thoughts on what this rattle could be? Do I just need a new door catch?
Thanks in advance.
Cheers,
D
Hi,
Makes it the perfect family car, even rattles and squeaks for the kids
I have a similar issue, and working through a few things to get rid of these rattles and squeaks coming from the rear boot area.
Does your rear door light come on the dash, I have started noticing this on mine as well and also going to start moving the door catch around a little. This did start after carrying a second spare tyre on the back of the spare wheel during a trip to Namibia.
Cheers
David

Dad's gen1, my gen2, my boet's gen2 and my gen3 all have that rattle. Sound is exactly the same. Even sounds the same when you close it.
I wish I knew the answer to this as the front of the car is so solid inside the dash but the rattle from the rear is also starting to get to me. Especially since my driveway is effectively 4kms of dirt road.

Mine is gone, for now. The key is not in the actual door catch but in the rubber stopper/catcher on the door as well as the rubber strip on the actual door.4ePikanini wrote:Dad's gen1, my gen2, my boet's gen2 and my gen3 all have that rattle. The catch must be set to still close and open easily enough, but close firmly and keep the door tightly closed, thus keeping the light showing that it is open, OFF. The rubber stopper(just below the clip) must be adjusted to lift/stop the door ever so slightly just before it clips. This ensure a tight fit and a double closure point for the door to rest on when closed. I have also had an irritating squeek at the rear which subsided when the door rubbers are sprayed with some silicone base(as used on dash to give shine etc) but this attracts dust like crazy and once dusty helps zero. I have noticed that at close on 250 000km on mine that the paint has been chaved away at some points by the constant movement and recently decided to stick isolation tape on the body where the rubber meets as a buffer for the chaving, similar to the lower door sills on the side etc. This cleared my squeek completely and no dust gets atracted to it! Luckily mine is white so the white isolation tape does not show but I am sure that the tranparent stuff like they use on the side sills will work even better.

Thanks guys.
David - no, my dash door light doesn't shine, but I've been watching it ...
CATS - ja, a quick polish of all the rubber used to do the trick for the squeak, but now not the rattle.
I sometimes carry 1 or 2 bikes on my sparewheel Thule carrier, which perhaps is slowly straining the catch? I make a point of only loading the bikes when actually travelling (I take them off when the car is parked for extended periods). The door doesn't rattle at all when the bikes are mounted.

My car was at the mechanic for an oil service last week and I mentioned the door rattle as I was leaving. I use Malcolm's Auto in Maitland - Malcolm's been working on Pajero's for donkeys years...
He grabbed a hammer and impact screw driver and fixed the rattle in less than 60 seconds!
The u-shaped metal catch. He said that with time it moves slightly and causes the rattle.
The door is now rock-solid when it closes and the rattle is history...

I had a rattle at the rear of my car - you could sometimes hear it under hard braking, the accelerating.
It turned out to be the slider that stops the door opening too far - there is play inside the mechanism (under the rear door). I put a large glob of door hinge lubricant (thick paste) in side the mechanism, it is it totally quiet now.

My Car is so old with lots of rattles. If it stops rattling I would get suspicious and will start looking for missing parts
