Rear Diff Lock
I have recently bought a 1996 LWB 3.6 V6 Auto, and as I can see, this seems to be basically top of the range for generation 2 pajeros in South Africa.

Having just had its flashy bits (transfer indicators etc) repaired, solenoids etc sorted, it dawned on me that on the indicator display, there seems to be
provision for a light for rear diff-lock.
i.e. Each wheel shows as a white outline (to make provision for the green light)
the center-diff lock is a white outline box (making provision for the amber light)
the front diff shows as a solid tear drop shape (solid, as there is no provision needed for a light)
yet, the back diff shows as a white outline of a teardrop shape (telling me, that its an outline, because provision is made for a light)

No where is there a switch, to switch on / off the rear diff, and at no point in the transfer cycle does a light ever come on, indicating a locked rear diff.

This begs the question (as I have no idea) does this model Pajero come with a lockable rear diff?

Re: Rear Diff Lock
No diff lock for this one as far as I know, That was reserved for the gen 2.5 face lift or blister fender. You probably have a limited slip rear diff so all is not lost

Re: Rear Diff Lock
If you can find a locking diff, compressor and switch out of a Blister Fender, you can fit it plug-and-play style: all the wiring is already there. The trick is finding that locking diff...

Gerrit,

I really appreciate this advise, but you need to stop swearing at me like that, I need it in plain newbie english,
Whats a blister fender.

OK, so I understand what I'm looking for is a Locking Diff, compressor and a Switch.
What year what model, and I'll get right on it.
Re: Rear Diff Lock
The Blister Fender was the final incarnation of the Gen 2. It was launched in 1998 and was built until the arrival of the Gen 3 in 2000. They can be identified by the absence of plastic cladding on the body sides and by the pronounced styling blisters on the fenders: hence the name. Be sure to get a diff with the correct gear ratio (4.36:1 for the 3.5 DOHC if I recall correctly. It might be best to actually buy the entire rear axle. There are some posts on the forum about the process. I am sure you will find them with a little digging.

There never was a 3.6 Pajero! Do you mean 3.0 or 3.5 or has it been enlarged? :D I see you posted the 3.6 in another thread as well so it's not a typo?!

Hi,

Greetings to all from this Southamerican newbie. I own a Japan version 1994 Montero 3.5 (petrol) SWB, and I am wondering in anyone has fitted the rear OEM diff locker from the US version (I believe the SR model), or as mentioned in the previous posts, from the 2.5 blister fender.

Also, if anyone who owns a US version SR could assist with the follwing, it would be much appreciated

1. Photo of the actual rear diff (focusing on activation mechanism and how does it differ from the limited slip version)
2. Photo of the OEM switch (located in the center console, next to Ashtray)
3. Photo of wire harness connector (cable colors)
4. Photo of compressor location and unit itself
5. Part numbers on the individual components (switch, harness, compressor, locking diff)
6. Is the factory locking diff a DANA unit or Mitsu?

Thanks and regards,
