Re: What have you done to your Pajero today?
Took my paj to Morne at Team Silverton Wynberg, Sandton to check that the viscous fan is behaving itself, which it is, and also to get an assessment on how the cooling system is performing.

I was prompted to do this because in August, well loaded and travelling about 115kph in speed control up the hill to Jozini, (ambient temperature around early 30s) I saw the temperature gauge go past its normal horizontal position for the first time in 7 years of ownership. I quickly tapped off and changed down to 4th so never got to the red and didn't suffer any coolant loss.

Anyway Morne says the viscous fan, thermostat and radiator are working and there are no gas leaks. However there are a few bits of visible vegetation and winged creatures in the AC and radiator fins.

He has recommended removal of the radiator, strip the header, flush and chemical clean, along with a cleanup of the airways. This is followed up with a flow test, re-installation and new coolant. He says that the wall thickness of the tubes in the OEM radiators in these models (NM) is too thin to rod safely.

So will be booking in for this soon.

Have you replaced your water pump? I heard that it's wise to do so every 200k km.

Based on my reading of the various forums over the last couple of years I am in the process of doing a bit of a heating/cooling system preventative maintenance program. There is nothing worse than heat for destroying engines and engine replacement / refurbishment costs are horrendous.

So far I have replaced the two T-pieces that supply the heater (supposedly prone to getting brittle at this age and then failing catastrophically).
Next up is water pump, thermostat, radiator cap and radiator hoses + belts.
When I do that I will drop in a new timing belt tensioner mechanism because Freek said mine was noisy. (Already replaced the top chain guide)
Then I will get Silverton to do their thing as described.

I also want to get the car to Alan Black for diagnostic + dyno test to see if the diesel pump and/or injectors need attention.

And then I really want to do a PowerBrake upgrade and replace the flexible brake lines with s/s braided reinforced lines.

And then ...

mmm once you fall in love with a Pajero its more expensive than keeping a free-spending woman!

Fitted lynx bash plates :)

Now keen for a Hennops trip!

Interestingly, the following had to come off to fir the plate... First I thought it was a stabiliser bar or something, but then it was so short...

Any ideas? The bash plate now screws in where it was.

Updated with before and after pics... You can't really see it because of shadow (only had my phone with me...) - will try play with the some white balance later. But I'm quite happy that the appearance from the front is not really affected. From the side, you can now clearly see the bash plate :( but this is because of the lift an no runner boards. Just gives more reason for rock sliders later on...

Re: What have you done to your Pajero today?
Got a "diesel service" at Alan Black yesterday.

233750km and this is first pump / injector look see.
Done as a preventative measure - didn't want to cook the engine from overfuelling that could have been pre-emptively picked up.

I was really reluctant to do a dyno test (0 to 4000rpm) as I generally cruise at 2000rpm and hardly ever run the engine over 2400rpm.

The "Before" Dyno test showed the pump OK and the vehicle just a bit down on power.
I had the choice of leaving as is or replacing injectors and decided for the above reasons to replace the injectors.

I also had tappets adjusted at same time - some had very wide gaps.

As a bonus the "After" Dyno test showed we had picked up about 3kW and 12Nm torque.
It will be interesting to see if/how this impacts fuel consumption.

I was impressed with the prompt service, clean and tidy workshop, technicians' knowledge and the fact that I could watch the work being done and ask questions as it progressed.

I have tried to upload some pics but getting a failure message from the site - will try again later.

Re: What have you done to your Pajero today?
Replaced timing chain tensioner. The ratchet mechanism on the old one was warn and did not keep a constant tension on the chain. Took some of the crud out of the egr valve body at the same time since the egr pipe had to come off to remove the tappet cover anyway.

Hooked up the fake dummy side lights on my Gen3. Now when im driving one can properly see when i'm driving at night and stopping. It makes a huge diffrence!

Re: What have you done to your Pajero today?
Actually it was on Saturday...

We traded the Pajero in and got a Jetta Tdi instead. I am currently dealing with the great sadness of having said goodbye to probably the best vehicle I have ever owned  , but it just did not make sense to have two four wheel drives :| .

The Pajero ended up doing all the on-tar and easy dirt road touring while the Patrol and later the Land Cruiser towed the Xplorer around and did the dirty work.

We owned the Pajero for just about 220000 km and traded it in with almost 292000 km on the clock. It gave us excellent service and made many family memories. I hope she is well cared for in the next phase of her life and that she continuous to give sterling service for much longer...
