Hi
I am new to pajeroclub, and have only now been a proud owner of a 2001 3.2 DID LWB for about 3 days.
On purchasing the vehicle, I knew a few things:
1. It was a single owner vehicle with service records
2. The centre diff-lock light flashes from time to time without explanation
3. The heat gauge on the dash board dances all over the place.
I think that point number 2 above has been adequately covered by the technical area of the website- and my guess/hope is that it is faulty solenoid.
But item number '3':
i. I replaced the temperature sender unit in the engine, and the gauge stopped dancing. It now sits just under half way (where it should) for 99% of the time. But often, when I stop the vehicle, park - come back 5 min later, and restart the gauge jumps straight in the red...and then over the next 5-10minutes will drop itself back down to normal. (not really dependant on where I am - i.e. in traffic or open road.)
It still does seem to be ever so slightly effected by engine revs. I am guessing that as I now changed the temp sender unit, and 90% of the problem has been resolved that the wire may be making intermittent 'shorts' - effecting the gauge?
PLEASE CAN ANYONE SHED ANY LIGHT ON THIS??
I need to - if possible - do a DIY! I'm skimp after buying it!
thanks
Welcome to the club, I like it when folks jump in and get involved from the start
You have probably been next to a golf in a parking lot that has just been parked and the owner is on his way to the centre when the thing for no apparent reason starts its electric fans and gives you a good fright, well the same is happening here your temp will still rise as the motor is hot but the cooling effect has stopped when you shut down. the temp will rise and if my Pajero is something to go by the gauge is only good to block a hole in the dash. As long as the temperature does not rise like that while you are driving there is no need to concern yourself. Replacing the temp sender is pobably the best thing you could have dont to your baby as that sends signals to the computer that controls your fueling and could save you a packet in consumption.
The best way to get a reasonably accurate idea of the temp. is to fit an after market unit, these units are much more sensitive than the ones in the dash and would do a lot to ease your mind. At a later stage you could go so far as to fit an exhaust gas temp unit as this is the best insurance on a diesel motor.
ENJOY THE PAJIE

Hi- thanks for the help! The concerning thing is that it has on occasion suddenly jumped up whilst driving! I've immediately veered off the road onto the verge and jumped out of the car - run across to the engine cavity and stood with my ear mm away from the radiator to listen for boiling, put my hand on the hoses/radiator...and it's now in retrospect that I think they should have been hotter! I am going to change the thermostat as a matter of course this morning, and hope that'll resolve the issue.
I certainly do want to get a EGT. What aftermarket temp gauge/sensor system do you recommend and how does it work?
thanks

Welcome here.
There is a well documented problem relating to the computer board behind the dash on the Pajero Gen3 diesels that feeds the info to the temp gauge that you see. This is very common on the Ausie Pajero forums but I have heard of one or two in SA as well that does this. The board needs to be replaced at a heavy cost a would suppose, but might be repairable by a highly qualified techie.
Do a search on the net and you should get more info.

Thanks Cats. But I've been lucky (touch wood)...I zipped down to Mitsub. this morning, spent R199 on a new thermostat...popped that in 20 min later...and hey presto! No more heat gauge acting like a rev counter!
THANK GOODNESS I CAUGHT IT! The old one was obviously catching from time to time, as the damage showed on the old unit itself!!!

You were lucky!! That could have been catastrophic had you left it.
Glad it is sorted.
Now I have another thing on my 'to replace' list, having just recently replaced the timing chain guide and diesel rubber hoses as preventative measures.
Still need to do Thermostat and Waterpump as preventative measures, standing at 220 000km and still going good.

Hi Goldmember
I think you should go down to Mitsu and spend R199 bucks and replace your thermostat... hehehehehhahaha
Be glad you caught it early, I had a 97 3.5 and it took me 2 months to realize my problem was a blocked radiator. This after I spent a few bucks on other test and replacements and so on.
But regardless of all the heating and overheating, that engine was still 100% when I decided to buy the 3.8 shorty.
STRONG REALLY STRONG!!
Ps. Welcome to our Forum "Family". Hope you will have a ball of a time reading and contributing.

thanks Andre - I feel part of the crew already! (with grease on my hands already! - HA! The last vehicle I owned where I worked on it myself was a 1969 MINI!)

I never thought I'd say this: But in some ways I miss my mini right this very minute!!...MUCH TO MY COMPLETE HORROR---the temp gauge is acting like a rev counter again! I am seriously irritated now!HBannink wrote:Glad you caught the culpritGoldmember wrote:thanks Andre - I feel part of the crew already! (with grease on my hands already! - HA! Built it to cosworth spec and upped the displacement to 1475cc, engine was changed every 6 weeks Too much power
I really am considering installing an aftermarket one to avoid all the drama of a cct board/ecu issue or other...in the long run it may just be cheaper----who knows?
But I suppose, I will do two things first:
1. Replace the wire from the heat sender to the ECU
2. Open the dash to check for any dry joints/loose wires (I know tracker installed a system (who knows where because they won't tell you!) and a new radio was installed - both of which could have botched the wiring in this area!
After that - if still no joy...its MADMAN.CO.ZA time I think - any advice with these, or the above solution quest would greatly be appreciated...
