I have a 2006 3.2 LWB Diesel and this issue started last year but has popped its head up again. Last year in the Kgalagadi I found the front wheel green lights would flash on and off and then go off completely after travelling for some time on the dune road towing a trailer. This happened again while driving in heavy rain on a tar road and would lock and then show unlocked after a period of time but eventually locked again after stopping the car and turning on and off.
This year I was back in the Kgalagadi and the corrugations were really bad and I noticed while in 4H after a few minutes of travelling the front greens started flashing once again to eventually turn off. I ignored this until the centre diff orange light came on (which is apparently a fault warning) and the only way to re-set was to turn the car off completely. On our trip home the issue continued and I only used 2H.
I have since checked the system and it all engages and disengages perfectly when the car is in my driveway and thought I had solved the problem. The vacuum system appears to be fine as I can watch and see it engage and disengage when someone moves the gear selector. I have checked the front diff oil and it is fine, clean and full. However I drove the car afterwards and looked fine but after 20km on tar the front greens started to flash again. The same happened on my way home after the car had stood and cooled down for a few hours (visiting friends). The next day I drove the car again and the front greens started to flash after 40km. I was in traffic so I kept changing between 2H and 4H and sadly I could not get 4 x steady greens.
I suspect that some sensor is playing up and need advice where to look. It would appear that the sensors are detecting a difference in wheel speed (rotation) and hence kicking out the system. Does the Pajero use the ABS system to detect correct operation of the 4-wheel drive system?
I have changed tyres in between and this has made no difference so I don't think it has anything to do with wheel travel.
Could the incorrect oil in the front diff cause this problem?

Change the sensor on the front diff that detects proper (dis)engagement.

Hi 4ePikanini
I have been doing more homework and I plan to check that sensor. It appears to be a very mechanical switch with a ball bearing that pushes against the shaft. I am driving to Cape Town next week so will leave things for now. I have also cleaned the ABS sensors on the front wheels and checked the vacuum relays just below the air filter. I will see if any of this has helped on my travels to Cape Town.

Hi All
Before the trip to Cape Town I checked that there was no problem with the system engaging when the car was stationary and it was working fine. I managed to drive about 400km in 4x4H then it suddenly disengaged. I stopped the car and managed to get 4x4H to engage again. It was better than before but still not right.
On returning I gave the problem more thought and decided to rotate my tyres fronts to the back as I could see a slight difference in wear. I have just done a trip of over 5000km and mostly in 4x4H as I was towing on a lot of gravel. The good news is that problem has been resolved. This just shows how sensitive the 4x4 monitoring system is in that it could pick up the difference of the circumference of the different tyres.
I plan to put on new tyres in the near future and will keep an eye on the lights.
Hopefully this will help others

Hi Guys i am new on the "Parero Owners Club" and greetings to all.
I own a 2003 Pajero 3.2 TD :SWB Auto .with 310000Km on the clock but in still good condition.
Recently i have had a Major Undercarriage service done on my Padji namely replacement of the following:
Coil springs x4
Shocks and bushes x4
steering couplings "swivel rods"
various mount bushes .
brake plates and pads
Full lubrication and fuel service .
sensor and ABS checks.
My issues that i have recently encountered is as is described in the previous Re: Not staying in 4H - Front Lights flashing : however until now i have not had my 4x4 warning lights flashing, i did have a case of the 4H , 4HLc and 4hLLC disengaging , however this i believe it was because the functions had not been used for a very long time before i got the Padji, all works well as i use the functions regularly in 4H and 4HLc , and 4HLLc for testing purposes.
After the service while driving home from Bela Bela on the R516 Tar road after 30km the orange transfer light came on 1/sec, after stopping switching the Padji of and starting it again all was well according to page 5-24 owners Manual. after traveling again but on dirt road 15 km the light came on again , the same procedure solved the issue.
my service Guy in Bela Bela , requested we do a diagnostics check to see if any connections are loose under the Padji as he did retighten the exposed harness .
My other issue i experienced after pulling out a stuck car in a mud soaked dirt road hole using 4LLc drive , recovery went smoothly no issues, after returning to the Clear dirt road i noticed that all the 4x4 lights were flashing and stopping i had lost all drive to the wheels,
with the Padji still running and putting the Padji into PARK to climbout and see if anything had happened underneath the gears grinded as if the clutch was not pushed in ???? its and AUTOmatic, anyway i moved the 4x4 drive back and fourth to see if any thing happened in stationary mode engine running , nothing worked , in 2H the two green lights flashed still no drive as with the 4H 4HLc and 4HLLc.
i switched the engine on off and on twice , nothing, then after a 30sec all off then i started the Padji and all was BACK TO NORMAL , drove to local shop and then back to home and all was fine . using the modes to check if all was working , all functions and modes worked.
Any comments for anyone will be great if any has a comment as to WHY , or what may cause this function issue.
kind regards. My access road on the Farm to the House i call :RED BULL 4X4 EXSTREAM CHALLANGE Kind regards Anton

On mine it was the front actuator that was a bit sticky, clean and lubricated and put back all good. You also might want to check the vacuum pipe that actually goes to the diaphragm, it must be a good fit, if you have sufficient length, trim it about 10 mm and put back.
Pajero 4 x 4 systems are like the brain, they must be "exercised" regularly to ensure correct operation at all times, be honest all of you out there, when did you last check your 4 x 4 Super Select was working ?.

So by putting new tyres on the car the problem disappeared. This shows that my traction control is actually functioning correctly and that over some distance could pick up the difference in the revolutions of each wheel due to the slight difference in tyre circumference.
