What to buy!!
I'm in the market for a LWB auto 4x4. My budget is R120K. I've looked at the Landy Disco 2, 2.5 diesel but feel its unreliable from talk I've heard so that made me look to the rest of the market, hence the Pajero!. If anyone has some advice or reccomendations for me I'd greatly appreciate it. My main objective is to try my best to avoid any nasty repair supprises!

Mitsu is definately gonna give you bang for your buck.

I don't regret my decision to give this Jap brand a try. It's Worth it

Three choices ... Pajero, Shogun, Montero ... all made by Mitsubishi :) :) :)

For your money you'll find a very decent Gen 2.5 blister fender (1998 - 2000) or an early Gen 3 (2000 - 2001), possibly later model with high mileage. In the Gen 2.5 I'd avoid the 2.8 diesel, and in your budget the 3.2 DiD Gen 3 is probably out of reach. Which means you'll have to make do with the 3.5 V6 petrol ... no train smash ... lovely powerful, bulletrpoof engine, if a little thirsty. But no nasty repair surprises!

Just thinking ... Restricting your search to autos may eliminate some great buys ... the Mitsu manual boxes are very reliable.

Tim, if i was in your position with that budget I would not hesitate to go for the last of the blister fender (Gen2.5) 3.5V6's and you will have cash to spare on upgrades. Hell, even if I had 200 k I would still go with that. Oh yes... it would be an auto as well.

Why? It is a Gen2, it is a petrol, it has rear diff lock...

A friend is selling his 2001 3.2DiD. 215k kms, full service history. Lots of extras - frontrunner roofrack, extra sparewheel etc for R120k. Is that a reasonable price?

Mate of mine is busy buying a 2003 DiD LWB GLS with 180k km for R130k from a Pajero dealer.

Re: What to buy!!
Guys thanks for all the input and advice. I found a '99 blister fender 3.5 GLS auto for R116k that Im going to do an OTP with tomorrow. K's are low, (140k) and new tyres. Service history isnt complete so I'll get it AA checked.
I saw the 3.2 DiD mentioned, very clean and well kept and still a big temptation but im keen to get an auto!
Once again thanks for the response and a great site!

Hi Mac

I was advised to keep with petrol as the diesel engine might need attention from 200k onwards, besides being more costly to maintain. I know consuption is higher on the petrol but reliability on a high miler is more NB.
