Gents,
Did the reset and drive in circles thing again and set the declination to 20deg East. It's been a few days now and the compass seems good and accurate. Still wouldn't use it to find an aircraft carrier at night, but for recreational use it seems fine.

Why did you decide on 20deg East?

Roelf...

Declination in your area is about 18 degrees WEST, not east. Closest I could find is Phalaborwa.

I once had an issue with my Gen 3's compass as well where it did not want to complete the calibration sequence. This was solved by first selecting a declination of 20 deg East, completing the calibration sequence and then correcting the declination. I have no idea why it worked...

SimonB,
Absolutely correct. That is why my setting was 20West, but the advice here was to go 20E. It isn't a pain to set, so I thought why not!

I'm a geologist and think I understand the earth's magnetic field, but my compass is working wonderfully now. I actually use that screen again, which means I don't have to look at my fuel consumption the whole time anymore.

Here is what I think:

The direction to the magnetic north pole is about 20deg to the west of true north from here. So we need to "drag" the north on our display to the east until it points true north. That is why we need to set it at 20deg E.

I think!

I will print a pdf of the setting of the compass and pass it on to the forum. Try it. Tha manual also warnd that the AC fan may interfere with the compass. Same applies to any mother magnetic interference.

Hope you find your solution too.

Regards, Anton
Hi Anton
Did you post the PDF? If so, where can I find it, please?
Thanks
Louis
