They removed the inner roof lining, then bolted or pop-riveted roof carrier rails on. Roof rack brackets were then attached to rails. I imagine they did insert /attach some support, for the weight it will have to carry.
My only concern now, as not having been there when it was installed, is that the correct sealing / rust preventative measures were undertaken (during installation).
The Paj was sold to me as a 1999 model, but i'm certain it is of an older manufacturing date. This could have arisen, when the Paj was imported from Botswana....... needless to say....i'm really chuffed with the rust free condition........ hence my going overboard with gadgets / mods.
