Roelf, I think you're correct. I pulled the 4wd select shifter out and checked continuity at each position and it's OK. Checked all of the connections I could get to on the transfer case and gearbox and everything was clean and tight. The front axle is operating properly also. I'll see what the agents have to say and make a decision from there.
Thanks,
jeff

talking about a 4X4 ECU.
Seems to me that some of agents like said ,is playing trail and error game.
Very frustrating ,cant tell when its giong to be sorted out.
Any body know a gearbox specialist that can help?

the big culprits are the vacuum pipes, the actuator and the vacuum solenoids

Jintu,
My cents worth. To engage low-range you have to do the following:
a. Vehicle must be stationary.
b. Gear shifter in NEUTRAL.
c. Steering in the straight ahead position.
d. Select $LLd.
e. Wait for the flickering lights to go steady.
Only then will it be in 4low. If the lights are still flickering, it is not in low.
The Pajero is so well designed that you can basically "butcher" it in 4 high and it will still do what other cars need low range for. I once got stuck in sand in Zambia and battled to get out off it. I could not get the engine to rev above ±2500rpm. After a long struggle we got out and whilst driving at normal speeds, I started analizing what happened in the sand and then I realized that I forgot!!! NB forgot to select 4 low. Our tour leader in his Landcruiser bakkie battled to get out in 4 low but the Pajero eventually made it in 4 high. The moral of the story, even if it is not in 4 low, you will be able to climb steep hills, cross sand, etc.
