Hi Cats,
Vehicle currently at dealer, box still not out. Technician scheduled to do another service first. Asked workshop managed to check the points you and Gerrit mentioned. Says they routinely replace the rear crankshaft seal.
He says they don't adive you to open and strip the gearbox unless there's something wrong. Told him what I read on the forum. He said if retaining plate were giving problems it would start with a whine. (Didn't see that in you related thread though).
So, again choices. Would prefer having it done preventatively. Time is also a bit of an issue - they're sqeezing me in at the workshop and I was really hoping to be able to get back to my family tonight if they manage to to fix problem in time.
Any suggestions as to what I should do ?

Wessel,
If it is JJ Smit you are talking to, you can go with his advice.
He knows his Pajero's, and he has the advantage of physically seeing the car now.

Hi Anton,
Usually deal with JJ, but he's currently on leave. Brian is helping me now, and has really been helpful so far.

Just got a call from Mitsu. Flywheel + clutch had to be replaced.
Decided to bite the bullet at just under R22 k and gave them the go ahead. Hopefully they'll have her ready before closing time.

Frikkadel - that's a lot of moolah.
Now you'll be set for another 200000 km's!

Ouch
But at least it is not something else. If they are not opening the box then leave the retaining plate till later. It wont let you out in the cold and in need of a towtruck. It will only start to irritate you by slipping out of first gear on some pullaways if it is out of spec.
Let me know if your clutch laso comes out as light as feather like mine when I had mine done! Pure bliss.
