I can't comment on the Mitsu box, but on my Touareg (Auto), I can't kill the engine unless it is in "P".
Safety feature, I suppose?

I don't think it really matters, but I may be corrected.

What I know is that it is not recommended to have the box in "N' whilst the vehicle is moving.
In my opinion, my Pajero wont start unless its in Park, I would reckon then by reverse deduction that the Autobox was designed so that the engine should only be switched off in the same state.

I have just checked.

I can only start in "N" & "P"
I can kill the engine in any position
I can only remove the key if it's in "P"

This is exactly how I would have designed it as well.

I must admit, I have often gotten into my Pajero, inserted the key, turned it (had a mini-minor heart attack, thinking how much a new Willard battery was going to cost me) only to realize that I had left it in drive.

So looks like I can take my key out in any position, but I imagine the gods would want me to put it in Park 1st before switching off and removing the key. ;)
