On the Gen 3 the alternator voltage signal (the signal that the voltage regulator uses as feedback to determine the alternator's output voltage) is sensed externally. In fact it is sensed from the hazard light circuit. Unfortunately that means that a burnt out fuse in the hazard light circuit leads to the alternator voltage regulator losing its control feedback signal. The result is that the alternator output voltage rises above the maximum allowable value of 14.4V and the dashboard lights up like a Christmas tree as various control ECUs sense the over-voltage.
Now it is quite common that trailer wiring faults or excessive trailer current draw leads to a blown hazard light fuse and hence to the "Tokyo by night" dashboard
