Hello,
Not sure if this is the right way to reopen an older discussion, but here goes.
Couple of months ago had what I thought was Belt Squeal on startup. Lasted 10 seconds or so and stopped. Longer if blowers were on etc.
Had all the bets changed. All was fine for a couple of weeks and now its back again. Really loud squeal on startup. 10 seconds and then stops instantly. Water pump belt was a bit slack and I could tighten myself to now 1/4" either way with finger push.
Lower alternator belt feels tight enough but I am sure the noise is alternator related. Any opinions please? Bearing, brushes, belt or pully's?
Is it possible to tighten alternator belt as DIY or does it need go up on a stand?
Thanks in advance

I would suggest you try the candle stick trick first (as mentioned earlier in this thread). I have never used a candle, but grew up with a "Sunlight Soap" cake in the Valiant's toolbox for the same purpose.

I now have a candle in the car just in case thanks.
However the good news was that the belt was loose and needed tightening. Mechanic said new belts need to bed in a bit on the pulley grooves then tighten up again. He also said the alternator pulley itself might need changing. Something to do with the material that the old ones were made from easily corroding and slipping?
Other good news is yes you can adjust yourself from underneath if you are somewhere with good light. Same type of pulley adjustment as on top.
